I'm not trying to say it is. But for the person who misses the artist (or any other choice in other survivors) it will always be a big deal.
Erol Otus is objectively an important early D&D artist who helped set the tone of those early days and colors people's perceptions of the game to this day. It is not just "he is someone's fave."

Again, I'm not trying to downplay Erol's importance to the game. I'm just poiting out a rule that this game has. If @CleverNickName wants to alter the list it's okay with me.

Limit Break Dancing
Augh! Otis was supposed to be on the list! All of the D&D cover artists were supposed to be on the list, at a bare minimum, and he is on my original write-up as well. But for some reason, when I was thinning the list down, I deleted the line he was supposed to be in.

(For those not in the know, Errol Otis illustrated the cover of Basic and Expert D&D. And as @el-remmen (and others elsewhere on the 'net) have pointed out, his work was pivotal in the development of many of D&D's now-assumed "rules" of what certain things in the game are "supposed" to look like.)

Alright, let's do this. But I don't want this to set a precedent: The List Is The List, and going forward, it will continue to always be the list even when I screw up (and I screw up a lot.) This is a one-time exception.

All props to LaForce for being there in the beginning, though! My real downvote would have been for DCS, but I spared him for doing the cover of the first edition I bought.

I just had to look up half the names on the list as they were not jumping out to me as the more classic artists. Most, I was like- oh, I remember that or wow, they do great work. Not sure who will win, but I have my secret bet of one or two.

Honestly, only one artist really matters to me on this list. Todd's dragon art for both D&D and Magic are stunning. Plus the 3.5e Draconomicon cover art will always been my favorite D&D book cover art.
