probably because it's an underwhelming representation of said weapon, like, it's a SPEAR, a weapon used for it's superior melee range, without the REACH property.

The best answer I've got is that "most utilized weapon in history" is not the same thing as "most loved weapon in D&D."

Whereas, in reality, it's the weapon most compatible with reach. After holding a spear with both hands you can lunge with it with your hand at the back. There's also the problem that, while the rapier is d8, the spear, somehow, is just d6.

The best answer I've got is that "most utilized weapon in history" is not the same thing as "most loved weapon in D&D."

It's also underrepresented in reenactments - where there's overwhelming love for the less historically used longsword.

I agree that spears are lousy in d&d, but would just prefer to get rid of the real duds first.
