D&D (2024) 5e24 MM concept art

Oddly the pit fiend in the book doesn't use that style.
True. Which is weird in itself.

This demilich / wraith concept art is hella awesome and reminds me of the Soulless from Bungie's Myth series of 90s computer games. I've always wanted to convert them to D&D. They're basically legless flying skeletons that throw javelins.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the art style they went with for many of the devils.
I don't have them in front of me, but I know I like the bone devil, the barbed devil, and the horned devil. The others not as much (IIRC) The barbed and horned are some of my favorite depictions of those devils ever.

I am not a fan of the pit fiend art in the MM. It is OK, but does say pit fiend to me.
Yeah, that Pit Fiend is way better than the one in the book.
I agree!

To be fair it seems that what a pit fiend looks like has been radically different every edition. Honestly I'm pretty partial to the one in the Tales of the Valiant Monster Vault though I don't have a link for it handy.

I am feeling a little torn between liking the 2024 concept art of the Bugbear and the Bugbears from the Baldur's Gate 3 game. Both of them look pretty good to me. ☺️ :p I am currently playing a 6th-level Ranger (Gloom Stalker)/4th-level Rogue (Scout) Bugbear.

Oh, now I am interested! I haven't looked at the TotV bestiary yet (other than the free PDF they released which I don't think had art - IDK it has been a while). If the 5e24 MM pit fiend had been developed from this concept art it might have been my favorite, but currently it an image from 3e or 4e that I like the best. I will see if I can find it.

OK, I found it (TotV pit fiend). Though I like the art, if doesn't say pit fiend to me. It feels more like a balor IMO. The mace looks to much the wand of Orcus for me as well. It is a cool image though

I couldn't find the one I am thinking of, but this one from 4e's Monster Vault is 1A or 1B to the one I was thinking of. It really captures the 1e feel to me (enlarged fangs, flared / smashed nose, scorpion tale, etc. and modernizes the art.

1e art for reference:
