It was cracked on the day of release, actually. (don't worry, I bought the game and love it)

Steam bothers me as well. There's no guarantee that Steam will be around in, say, 5 or 10 years. What if I want to play HL2 down the road for nostalgia's sake, but can't because it can't unlock itself?

I haven't really seen any online services last for a long time, except maybe Battle.net or Kali. Ten's gone, Heat's gone. I know these are just matching services, but they're services nonetheless that require servers to be up 24/7.

I guess time will tell, really.

No. Just install Steam and log on as yourself. It will download and install the games you own for you.

I rather like that there is no possibility of me losing my cd this way.
