6 Eagle Down (Judge : Garyh)

[sblock=OOC]
I'll be on a train all day tomorrow. After that I'll be visiting my in-laws until New Years - I'll have a computer so I should be able to post, but if everybody's gone and you end up waiting on my feel free to NPC me.

EDIT: oh, hey, Mal posted last page. I could be taking my turn RIGHT NOW!

Doubling up of Armor of Agathys: nice. Makes it a bit hard to coordinate curses, though. Zombie 3 is probably going to go down to the double Armor next turn, so I'll try and take out H2 to give Ts'iri her curse bonus. Next round I'm going to head for Rinch and Frigid Darkness him, giving everyone an attack bonus so they can go nova on him. Is this a good time for that?

Question: don't gravehounds have radiant vulnerability? The posted stat block doesn't list it, but I could have sworn they had vulnerable 5 radiant.
[/sblock]

[sblock=Ignore this]
I originally rolled two attacks, depending on if the gravehound is vulnerable or not. But I decided that 7 Rabbit thinks it's vulnerable, so I'm going to use Dire Radiance no matter what. If it turns out not to be vulnerable, take 5 damage off his attack.

Here's my original attack, since it's in the Invisible Castle history so I want to be clear why it's there.

If the gravehound is NOT vulnerable to radiant:

As Ts'iri's curse falls on the gravehound, 7 Rabbit spins around and whacks it a glancing blow on the snout with his club. "Sorry," he mutters, seeing how little effect his attack had.

[sblock=Actions]
Standard: Basic attack on H2: War Club on H2 (1d20+9=13, 1d10+6=7) Forgot my +2 from Fate of the Void, so that hits AC 15 for 7 damage.
Move: None
Minor: None
[/sblock]
[/sblock]

As Ts'iri's curse falls on the gravehound, 7 Rabbit spins around and throws out his hand. Dire radiance washes over the hound, melting the rotting flesh from its bones. It is not destroyed, however, and as he lowers his club to make the attack, it leaps on him, bearing him to the ground. Its jaws close only around his frigid armour, tearing a chunk away and leaving his throat exposed, but he throws it off and rolls back to his feet before it can follow up. The zombie makes a clumsy swipe at him, missing.

"Let's kill these two quickly," 7 Rabbit pants to Ts'iri, "Then we can turn our powers on Rinch and his giant."

[sblock=Actions]
Standard: Dire Radiance on H2: 1d20+7+1+2 to hit (+1 Prime Shot, +2 Fate of the Void), using the attack roll from above gives a hit on Fort 14. Dire Radiance damage on H2 (1d6+5+5=14) 14 radiant damage (including vulnerability 5).

This triggers OA's from H2 and Z3: OA on 7 Rabbit (1d20+7=21, 1d6+3=5) H2 hits for 5 damage (takes away my temp hp), ongoing 5 necrotic, and knocks me prone. OA on 7 Rabbit (1d20+6=10, 2d6+2=14) Z3 misses.

Move: Stand.
Minor: None.
End of turn save vs the new ongoing damage: save vs necrotic damage (1d20=12)

Wow, that was almost a disaster. I got really lucky with my save.

[sblock=Mrithas, Jarel, 7 Rabbit]Mrithas was dazed, he couldn't do both actions.

Jarel: Miss. He has cover (-2). And if you had hit, you couldn't have pulled. The obstacles prevent it.

EDIT: Actually, looking carefully, he might have superior cover. I don't think you can draw an unobstrucated line to more than 1 corner of C3's square. If you were one more square to the right (in perfect diagonal) you could draw a line to 2 corner and have normal cover.

7 Rabbit: An OA intterupts the action, th3refore you get knocked prone before rolling the attack, therefore you have a -2 to attack.

Rolled 4, +7 +2 +1 -2 = 12, miss

[sblock=ooc]Actually Mal, based on your ruling that map objects always fill the squares they are in, there would be no LOS at all between Jarel and C3. In fact there isn't even a path to move there since 10AD and 9AC are corners and we can't cut corners. C3 is going to have to go around either the pillar or the wolf to get anywhere since he can't ge between them.

7 Rabbit, you're better off eiither shifting up one square and firing or staying and using your club. Personally, I'd say club, that way they get the cold damage from both of us and once the zombie is down, we can start flanking (or you can head up and I could take care of the hound).[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]He moved there from the rear a while ago. He started the fight at AE7 I think. And since he is a ranged attacker, he is quite happy to shoot from between the two obstacles; that's why I moved him there in the first place. He does have LOS; an unobstructed line can be drawn from one of his corner (lower left) to all four corners of Jarel (his previous target). But the reverse isn't true.

He can't move between these two obstacles (well, climbing the wolf wouldn't be too hard), but he certainly can shoot.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]
Well, too late now. I forgot that OA's interrupt, I thought I just had to worry about taking damage.

Regardless, I rolled a 4. Even with being prone, I only needed a 6 to hit. I think it was still a good tactical choice.

[sblock=OOC]Didn't know the monster was ranged so I was talking about Jarel LOS, not the monsters. So are you treating it like an arrow slit then? If so, it'd go under superior cover.

I'd just assumed when you said objects filled all of their squares, that they'd actually do that for LOS along with movement. Didn't know you were treating it different.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]Obstacles don't literrally fill their entire square.

I think you are referring to an instance when a PC wanted to cut accross the corner of an obstacle that did not seem too massive and I said to always treat it as if it filled the entire space (meaning, you can never cut across the corner of an obstacle on my maps). The reply was meant in the context of movement. I did not mean to imply that the world is filled with 5x5x5 solid cubes... ;) In other words, the wolf and the column do not connect to make an impenetrable wall. You can't move through them but you could squeeze through and you can shoot through.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

LOL that's what's confusing to me. To stop corner cutting, objects actually do have to fill their entire square (or at least the corner you are trying to cut). That's why I was treating every object as a 5X5X5' cube. ;)

PHB:
Diagonal Movement
Moving diagonally works the same as other movement, except you can’t cross the corner of a wall or another obstacle that fills the corner between the square you’re in and the square you want to move to. You can move diagonally past most creatures, since they don’t completely fill their squares.

This would mean that if you can't cut the corners on those 2 objects, the objects literrally would touch since it fills the corners. I understand what you are trying to say but no cutting = object covers corner = 2 corners touching in this case at least by RAW.

That said, I'm cool with you saying there is a gap like an arrow slit. I just thought it didn't have one with the no cutting ruling. Carry on. :)
