I brought this up in a thread about age... but here is the wizard and his assistant/apprentice. below that is a conversion done and posted on en. I would like to see how everyone (if anyone) would convert this couple any and all additions you would make, rules followed and fixed (hint- there was a mistake according to the original rules- and the conversion didnt take into account that horan could no longer summon an invisible stalker - i just updated the spell and left it at the level it was) so here goes... really hope form some imput.. I have done my conversion and will post when i finish the entire module.. oh yes and their spell books.

H. Court of the Master (use Map H)
Built in the section of the city reserved for nobility, this walled compound shows signs of recent repair and upkeep. The streets around it are clear of rubble and undergrowth.
This is the abode of the magic-user Horan (AC 4; MV 12”; MU 12; hp 32; AT 1; D by weapon; spells; S11, I16, W13, D10, C9, Ch14; AL LE). He normally dresses in a silken robe which hides his bracers of defense (AC 4) and his dagger of venom.
He also carries a potion of extra-healing and a scroll of protection from magic. His spells are:
First level: charm person, magic missile (x5), ventriloquism
Second level: detect invisibility, ESP, forget, invisibility, mirror image
Third level: clairvoyance, haste, hold person, slow
Fourth level: ice storm, minor globe of invulnerability, Rary’s mnemonic enhancer (already cast),wizard eye
Fifth level: Bigby’s interposing hand, cone of cold, feeblemind, Mordenkainen’s faithful hound
Sixth level: guards and wards
Besides the magic items listed above, Horan also carries a small silver whistle (to summon the leopards from area H2) and a miniature elaborately carved chest. This is actually part of a Leomund’s secret chest spell. If the chest is undamaged, the characters may summon Horan’s treasure chest. This chest is locked and may only be unlocked using the key and method described at area H10. In the chest is a potion of extra-healing, a scroll with the clerical spells cure disease and heal, a jewel of flawlessness, and 4,000 pp. There are also three gold tablets worth 500 gp each. These tablets are used by Horan’s agents to show the Main Entrance guards that they are on Horan’s business and guaranteed safe passage.
Horan is assisted by the woman Kwairno, (AC 9; MV 12”; MU 4; hp 9; #AT 1; D by weapon, spells; S9, I15, W11, D15, C9, Ch 10; AL LE). Kwairno wears a ring of free action and carries a wand of negation (5 charges). Kwairno’s spells are:
First level: friends, magic missile, read magic
Second level: stinking cloud, web

kwairnos spell book was listed as"In the book are the following spells: comprehend languages, friends, maglc missile, shield,
read magic, continual light, hold portal, knock, Leomund’s trap, stinking cloud, web."

horans
First level: affect normal fires, charm person, comprehend languages, erase, magic missile,

oh yes if you would like to see my conversion at any time... let me know...will send.. but im curious how different this one mage could be. I may perhaps even use someone else's version.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking? If you are just asking for a straight across conversion, I'd just rebuild him as a 12th level wizard. Or are you asking if we'd rebuild him and put our own flare on him? Like adding prestige classes and such?

well there are many ways that it could be rebuilt as just a 12 lv wiz
, the one I posted is from a previous conversion.. (3.0) and I didnt agree with all of the skill choices and such. I also altered the magic items, by using an eariler version and putting him through other modules.

but yes flare is great. now the closer it works with the module (ie the NPC's goals)

I have pdf and doc of the original unaltered mod if you would like to use that. guess I will just post what I have done too.

x

I actually have my own conversions of Horan and his apprentice on my PC at home. I ran Dwellers a while back, and had to have them statted up.

everyone, mmmm anyone will rebuild him as a 12th leve but will be different in some ways.. as because its a conversion, magic items could (and should) chandge. he doesnt have nearly enough equipment or possessions, this can all be added,

Hell I even developed another building for him as a lab/workshop/storage as being in this city so far from the real world he just cant jump out .to the local market and purchase supplies... I made him an inkmaker amongst other things and he would need to have stock of spell components, several of which that he uses are on the rare side.
further, his spell invisible stalker...was changed it makes for a necessary part of the adventure... I updated the spell but made it more expensive, where by the new rules he couldnt even know it...so someone may have come up with a different solution to this... would love to see it... again might incorporate this instead..
I love to see how other Dm's think I have played with some of the best, sorry to say most of them are dead, or oversea's or just finally grew up..lol

so does that help... is anyone listening.....lol

Conversion Notes on Spell changes: Ok I have to start off by listing my own failing, this is one of my favorite modules, I have run it many times yet never noticed that the amount of spells per day Horan was given in the original is wrong!!! He had 7 – 1st level instead of the 4 he should have using 1st and 2nd edition rules. Also had 6 – 2nd level spells instead of 4. Wait there is more!!! Horan has mirror image as a daily spell yet it is not in his spell book! Further and though it is a possible situation, Kwairno has 9 spells that Horan does not have in his spell book. This also includes READ MAGIC – how silly (for 1st edition anyway). I have altered this and increased the spells in Kwairno’s book as well.
Now for Kwairno’s spells, first off Friends is now a non-spell so I gave her hypnotism, which gives her a chance like friends. Continual light became continual flame.
Affect normal fires was an alteration which became transmutation, so I substituted feather fall also a trans. Push was a conj but is covered fairly close by mage hand a 0 Lv. Both Affect norm fires and push weren’t that useful, so I didn’t bother worrying about them. Detect thoughts takes over for Esp. 3rd Lv, suggestion takes over for 2nd Lv forget though I converted it as well. Arcane eye takes the place of wizard eye. Feign death is just gone, so I have converted it. (see appendix), monster summoning is now summon monster. OK now I’M confused the official conversion guide says that “invisible stalker” was changed to “Summon invisible stalker” yet is is not in the players handbook 3.0 or 3.5! so of course I have converted it. It is just part of Summon Monster VII which Horan can not cast! – My MCP over looked this as well. Further Summon monster has a time limit while summon invisible stalker is an indentured servitude with the job determining the length of the spell. Part water is now Control water, but is not the same so I have listed the old part water.
I have listed Horans Spell components and Focuses if you use them as they make for additional treasure. Horan would always carry the components for the spells he has remembered for the day.
Spell Components: M1-pinch of soot + a few grains of salt, M2-Powdered silver, M3-a drop of mercury, M-4 a piece of string and wood, , M-6 eyelash in gum arabic, M7-Iron pyrite + magic dust-50gp, M8-honeycomb+jade dust 10gp, M9-Undead bone, M10-pinch talc + powdered silver, or glass eye, M11-Licorice root shaving, M12-a drop of molasses, M13-½lb gold dust 30gp* M14-a pinch of dust + few drops of water, M15-glass or crystal bead, M16-A piece of string and ink consisting of squid secretion with black dragon’s blood, M17-a tiny crystal or glass cone, M18-A handful of clay, crystal, glass or mineral spheres, M19-tiny silver whistle, piece of bone, a thread, M20-Burning incense, small measure of brimstone and oil, a knotted string small amount of umber hulk blood, M21- burning incense and crescent shaped piece of horn M22- two small sheets of crystal or glass, M23- a rotten egg or several skunk cabbage leaves, M24- a bit of spider web, M25- ruby dust -50gp, M26-a pinch of powdered iron, (M23 pinch of wool)
Spell Focuses: F1-small parchment cone, F2-a forked twig, F3-small hearing horn, F4-Wing feather, F5-small straight piece iron (nail), F6-tiny bag + small candle, F7-a soft glove
I added a spell book horan found when he was younger in the module UK-2 See possessions.
* increased to cover the cost of making gold into dust.

A traveling spell book with the following spells - (DC 18 decipher script or Knowledge arcane will show that Horan did not inscribe these spells)
0 Lv: All
1st Lv: Tenser’s floating disc (evoc-vsm3)
2nd Lv: Leomund’s trap (Illu-vsm7)
4th Lv: Rary’s mnemonic enhancer (Trans-vsm16)

a manual of summoning familiars. An inscription on the inside cover makes it clear that if the contents of the book are read out loud before the casting of a find familiar spell, the spell will summon three potential familiars (each determined at random). The magic user must choose one of these at once and the others will depart. The manual may only be used once since the words vanish as they are read. The book may not be copied.

Unknown even to Horan, the rug on the floor is a Flying rug of welcome, and will detect as magical. If examined by someone with Knowledge Arcana and speaks Celestial) examines it thoroughly, the command word for the grappling action, will be found woven into the design on the face-down side. It is written in Celestial
Nobody else will be able to find the command unless a detect invisibility spell is used to look it over and they will still need to read Celestial or be using a Comprehend language spell.

Flying Rug of Welcome: This finely crafted rug looks like a normal floor covering, 5 feet wide and 10 feet long. When commanded to guard an area, it animates and attempts to grab, then grapple any Large or smaller creature that steps on it. The owner can set a password to allow creatures to pass without causing the rug to attack, and can command the rug from up to 30 feet away (though the owner need not be present for the rug to attack). The rug can attack one creature at a time; unless it is destroyed, it continues to attempt to grapple or hold its target until commanded to release.
It can also when the command word given, fly through the air as if affected by an overland flight spell of unlimited duration. If the device is within voice range, the command word activates it, whether the speaker is on the rug or not. It is then controlled by spoken directions. The command for the flying aspect has been lost.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a rug of welcome must hit a creature of its size category or smaller with its grab attack. (The rug has a +4 racial bonus on its grab attacks, already figured into the statistics above.) It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold

i am quick replying to myself to bring this thread back to the forfront... hopefully I can get some more feed back... with Rhun being the only one who seemed to be interested... and I would still like to get a look at his wiz.... hell would love to see your entire conversion...
