Similar happened to my first gaming group, that ran from around 1984 through to the late 90s.

My story has a happy ending however - 3 of us from my original group, plus 2 newcomers, "reformed" the group back in about 2005 and have been having a (mostly) weekly game on monday nights ever since. :)

Damn, that brought a tear to my eye.

I had a gaming group that lasted for 11 years before it finally broke up because of issues mentioned above. People just drifted apart because of college and careers.

Merlin's quote is so appropriate. A gaming group that lasts that long forms a sort of knighthood, a comitatus. And when it breaks apart nothing is the same.

There are secrets to keeping a group lasting that long. And old Dragon Magazine article "The Auld Alliance" shares some of those secrets. (issue #216)

My group gamed for 9 years, took a break for a number of years for silly stuff like marriage, kids, etc, and finally got back together and started gaming again. Your group may very well get back together after a few years.

If I had to guess, I'd say you're right. Two of the key members of the group have two small children each, so I think they're doing the right thing to take some time off from gaming and take care of their families. As time goes by, I hope we'll be able to get back together again.

I think that what I've really learned from all of this is that a gaming group, especially a group that becomes your friends, is such a valuable thing. Who knows, with some work those fair times may come again!

A brief moment of silence, if you please, for my Thursday Night gaming group. We endured for over ten years together, and we've seen a lot of good times. Sadly, the commitments of parenting and school finally brought the group down.

My advice: don’t lose touch with them. I was in a similar situation years ago, now we’re back gaming (well 4-5 out of the original 7 of us are) and we still meet the other two once or twice a year. We’ve 14 kids between us! Three of them are gamers. The eldest (girl) is now 20 and at university and the youngest is 13, so we have free time again.

As all things pass so shall new things come to be.

The events of one's life sounds through all lives it touches.

If a gamer you and yours are then gamers you shall always be.
