A Campaign With a Silly (But Interesting) Twist

Would you play in this campaign?

  • Of course I would! Hail the god of cheese!

    Votes: 20 22.0%
  • Probably, but the mechanic is a bit silly.

    Votes: 12 13.2%
  • Maybe, but I would groan every time Kayso was mentioned.

    Votes: 27 29.7%
  • No, I doubt I could get over it enough to have fun.

    Votes: 32 35.2%

I am with Hong and atomn; if balance is such an issue I would rather have the DM just say so and handle it in a metagame fashion and leave the justification out of the game world.

One of the stranger facts concerning him is that Kayso has no clergy and the occassional fool who claims to be Kayso's divine agent (usually a dairy farmer gone mad) has never been able to demonstrate the ability to cast divine spells.

The point is not to create a central silliness theme so much as to simply provide a mechanic with a quirky backstory that gives the campaign a unique aspect to keep powergaming under lock and key.

It is bad enough when the players make bad jokes and metagame, but when the DM make a bad joke part of the campaign and metagames, it is not fun for me.

What? So DMs can't have any fun now?

Although I have played more than one PC who is obsessed with cheese (the dairy product) -- one a cleric, one a favoured soul -- and so would be happy to encounter a god of cheese, I would probably not enjoy this particular environment, simply because I'd always be concerned that a decision I made would cost me my PC without warning.

But if you want to go ahead with this, you might want to consider naming his champions "The Lollipop Guild" since, after all, they're a bunch of munchkins.

Not when it feels like a joke at the player's expense.

(See how the most positive responses have been, "Yes, I would stick it to the DM and enjoy doing so"? That's the player-vs-DM vibe that this sort of thing encourages, IMHO.)

Well hey, if that is what they enjoy!

Where do I sign up for this?

Ok, it looks like there is a lot of interest in this. But if I do start it up, do you guys want a humor campaign, or do you want a campaign where Kayso is the only humorous part and only invoked in extreme circumstances? I had actually originally thought of the latter, but it seems like there would be support for the former too. In a game where players take themselves seriously about policing themselves, I doubt Kayso would ever show up. But if we want to make the object trying to summon Kayso as soon as possible, I can do that too.

Mmm Queso.

It really depending on the tone of the game. Of course with this game, don't be surprised if you get players that call themselves Sponge bob or Bullwinkle ("Gee Rocky").
