I have seen this type of approach used in various games I've played in by very different DM's... usually when a PC becomes too "Evil" for the standard group of Heroes. I have no problem with this mechanic as long as every PC is given a fair and clear warning about what type of balance you are looking to maintain. For example: Steer clear of Leaping, Power Attacking Frenzied Berserkers or else you may attract the notice of Kayso.

However, this world contains an unusual deity names Kayso, the god of cheese.
LOL!!

Kayso has descended from the heavens and named that character his champion. The character is immediately retired from the campaign and the player must create a new character with a different build. <...> What do you think? Would you play in this campaign?
What I see is a normal campaign where the DM doesn't allow overpowered/munchkin characters. All I see, is players doing several characters before being allowed to play. Well, to tell the truth, I am much more intereted on what will happen thereafter, what the campaign will be like, etc.

So you would not feel bad if your character was named a champion of Kayso? Also, remember, incrementally tweaking with DM feedback is fine. If you asked, I would tell you if it pushed the limit.
I'd probably consider it some kind of award in recognition of my min-maxing skills. :D

I did not vote as my opinion on this is not covered.

1: It would need to be a very silly world. Discworld as a setting would seem appropriate, others not so much.

2: I would need assurances that you're not going to pull this out of nowhere. Like Ashrum brought up, I'd be worried that characters would get yoinked just for being effective.

Somehow, I don't think reifying DM arbitrariness in the guise of deific intervention is the best solution to the "DM vs players" problem.

I don't like that it sets up an in-game rule for an out-of-game problem. If I was a player in the game I'd rather the power abuse problems be discussed and worked out out-of-game instead.

I played in a game one time where there was a Deity of Cheese. I have no clue what his name was, bu one of the other characters was the "Avatar of Cheese". He had his own theme song even. He could spontaneously create milk and other straight dairy products.

Avatar, avatar of cheese....bum, bum, ba dum.

Mmm, nope. I wouldn't touch this kind of game even with a 10' pole.
Just not my style... I got limited time in my life as is for D&D, I personally would not want to waste it playing in a game such as your describe.

But its just my opinion of course... I'm sure there are people out there who would love it.

Cheese glorious cheese...

Man, it would so be on.

Just think- frenzied berzerker. vow of poverty. Basically if I played in your game Kayso would be part of the party by the time it was over. :P
