A Campaign With No House Rules

Well, if your players are willing to push the envelope, your game will implode pretty quickly. There are some things that don't combine well together, even if they're fine on their own (for example, nightsticks and divine feats, particularly divine metamagic). There are other things that are just ridiculous (barbarian substitution levels that give pounce at level 1, Mage's Disjunction, and a lot of folks would say divine metamagic).

I don't think I have ever played a game with NO houserules (including White Box).
That said I don't think there would be much of a problem with RAW provided everyone understood from the outset that there would be no deviations and agreed with it.

Can't see it lasting for long without someone moaning about how it is so unfair to their choice of class/race or how the rules are dumb, so might not actually be worth doing.

I've done it... one of our players decided that she wanted to learn how to DM, and she ran her game with just the Core 3 books and no houserules.

I have to admit, it's kinda hard to remember what some of the rules actually were as written. ;)

The game didn't implode or anything though, it went just fine. Although, I can see serious problems if a DM doesn't houserule anything and allows all books instead of just Core - there are some things that seriously need to be houseruled in various splatbooks, if you ask me. :)

My campaign started with no house rules, but now we have:

-22, 25, 28, or 32 Point Buy (depending on campaign)

-Fixed Hit Points for levelling (ala Living Greyhawk - d4 = 3, d6 = 4, d8 = 5, d10 = 6, d12 = 7)

-Maximum wealth at first level

-Any class with the Turning class ability uses the Complete Divine variant

-Druids do not gain wild shape, they may instead choose from a list of variants (from PHB II, UA, and Dragon magazine)

-No multi-class restrictions (monks/paladins etc) or XP penalties or favoured classes

-Skill variant from Unearthed Arcana implemented (number of known Skills equal to skill points + Int modifier)

-Certain Skills folded: (campaign dependant – low magic = Skill folding/high magic = no Skill folding):

·Acrobatics (Balance + Escape Artist + Tumble)
·Deception (Bluff + Disguise + Forgery + Sleight of Hand)
·Disable Device (Disable Device + Open Lock)
·Perception (Listen + Search + Sense Motive +Spot)
·Persuasion (Diplomacy + Intimidate)
·Stealth (Hide + Move Silently)
·Use Device (Use Magic Device + Use Psionic Device)

-No Leadership Feat

-No 5 ft. step

-No iterative attacks

-Withdraw action from Saga implemented

-Saving throw variant from Unearthed Arcana implemented (save scores/magic checks etc)

-No death from massive damage

-The spell polymorph is replaced with the Polymorph sub-school from PHB II

-Certain non-Core WotC/Paizo material/variants available upon request (ask DM)

-Fewer Absolutes implemented (article by Sean K Reynolds)

-Every race/class/feat/equipment/spell/manoeuvre/mystery /power/soulmeld/utterance/vestige/magic item/template etc must be submitted for approval
