A Character Not Needed

In the past year I've joined a group that is well established (DM and group have known each other for years and they are the core; and they'll let ya know it.) and they are about to enter into a campaign they had taken a break from (campaign is a dungeon/investigative game, from what I hear). So I've been informed that I need to come up with a 9th or 10th level character idea. The problem is that all the bases are covered so to speak, the adventurers aren't in need of any one class.

The group so far is composed of:
- half-elf rogue/investigator
- human rogue/paladin/shadowed avenger
- human cleric
- human barbarian/fighter
- human fighter/dervish
- human sorceress/monk

My original idea was a druid/Master of Many Forms, since they really aren't in need of anything I figured I'd play something I'd enjoy. Problem is the DM doesn't seem to like the idea. Only role I see that seems to be missing is a true arcane spellcaster. I'm definitely in need of some suggestions.

That's part of what I hate about some DMs. Its one thing to limit a players choices based on whats available in the campaign, its another to limit the choices based on what the dm wants you to play.

But this is their group, their rules.

If this dm is a stickler I'd go with something ofbeat, maybe a dwarf or half-orc sorceror just so i can have some reminence of choice. Take him straight out, maybe add a few classes of this effigymaster prestige class from the complete arcane.

I love it when a DM says "Play whatever you want", then when you come up with something you want to play, he tells you no.

I would definitely consider somehting single classed. Really all depends on the role you want to play. Do you want to be a front-line fighter? Ranged fighter? Pure Caster?

As everyone else except the cleric is multiclassed...taking a pure class will not make you as versatile but will make you more powerful. They may see that as a threat if they are cliquish.

If they have all the bases covered, you could always go with a Bard to augment and buff what is already there.

Hm, if it were me I'd play a human Ranger/Fighter for the skills & weapon spec (say Fighter-6/ Ranger-4 or Fighter-8/ Ranger-2), but single class Wizard would also work well here. Dwarf Fighter is good, and powerful, also. Dwarf Fighter-10 with greatsword & full plate, power attack & great cleave, then take gtr wpn spec at 12th. :)

I told my newest player when she applied "We have a vacancy for a warrior type" - luckily it worked out very well. :)

If you are thinking about a wizard, make sure you find out how the DM runs the game. Fast advancement and/or a dearth of scrolls -- as well as a lack of downtime if you want to go the Item Creation route -- can make playing a wizard less than satisfying.

I'd choose a Warlock. Human would fit well with this group. Or you could hunt down a race with a CH bonus. Since I'm currently rereading OA, Vanara comes to mind... +2 CH and +2 DX...
