A Character Not Needed

I've played with a group similar to this, and while I agree with those who suggest a bard, I'd really recommend either a single-class wizard, a warmage, or a single-class fighter. They haven't got anybody who's just a meat shield (the barbarian/fighter is somewhat, but not to the level of a single-class fighter), nor do they have a full-on spellcaster.

I'd especially suggest the wizard. I've seen a sorcerer/monk in action and they can be very cool, but they just don't have the magical firepower of a wizard. You can buff the other party members ('haste', anyone?), or rain fiery badness down on your enemies . And they will love you for being able to 'identify' stuff for them, which I suspect the sorcerer/monk won't do (you could even charge them for it if it doesn't cause in-game dissension). :D

You could put together the many bard suggestions with your own idea of a druid and play a

Druid/Bard/Rogue/Fochlucan Lyrist (complete adventurer)

It sounds fun to me, I don't have the requirements in front of me, but I think you may have to be 10th to get this prestige.

Agree with above, which was my first thought: A Bard (with or without a level of Fighter) would greatly benefit this group. Sing one round, lasts for five more, gives six other people bonuses.

A Wizard too would be good, IF IF IF you gain enough scrolls and get some downtime to make things, as Reynard says. You'd be looking at 5th level spells, which would rock.

go with the Human or if your DM allows Changling Bard 5/ Chameleon 5(races of destiny)
bonus feat that you can change every day and 4th lvl arcane or divine spells cast at 10th lvl(thats any arcane or divine spell list i.e. Paladine, ranger, wujen, bard ect.)
follow that up with the vest of legends from DMG2 and your bard song is treated as 10 lvl
plus song of the heart feat from Ebberon another +1 to your bard song

If you want to play a more martial buffer, I'd suggest the marshal from Miniatures Handbook. They don't have spells like bards, but their auras can be extremely useful and they can fight as well as clerics, except marshals have access to all martial weapons just like fighters. They're also extremely skilled diplomats and may even be better a getting information from people through their use of Diplomacy.

Before you give up entirely on your idea, ask the DM precisely *why* he will not allow your prestige class of choice. If he simply says "because I don't like it" or "because I said so", take a walk and don't look back. The issues with coming in as a new player on an old campaign is that you end up being the "odd man out" and are oftimes overlooked, regardless of what you play. However, if he gives you adequate reasonings and specific examples of what he doesn't like/want in his campaign, see if you can work together to come up with a concept that you enjoy and works for him.

That aside...
Yes, the party is "missing" a pure wizard, but if they haven't needed one by now, they probably won't. Here's my advice.

I would go with a Human Bard/Druid with maxed out ranks in Use Magic Device. You're pretty much the ultimate jack-of-all-trades this way:

double up on healing magic
double up on supporting magic
songs for support
shapechange when you need to kick butt/do fancy stuff
UMD for the arcane "blaster" items
druids have some good "blaster" magic besides

As for a "prestige class", don't bother. You're already going to be bogged down with lots of options and tactics without having to worry about when you cna use your uber-stuff from the prestige.

I don't know if this is the same, but isn't there a Shapeshifter prestige class in the Ranger/Barbarian/Druid splatbook that allows you to shapechange into any subtype of creature? Go for that one if he'll let you and you REALLY want a prestige class. *G*

First off that is a large group and I'd be concerned with you taking a complete backseat to the "reliving" of the group. I've had this situation before and a lot of time was spent talking about that old adventure, or this item/artefact, etc.

Assuming you can handle that ...

Bard is always good. I would add in Duelist or Swashbuckler levels for a bit of flair. But that's because I love Bards and I love the Renaissance :) With access to Use Magic Device, the Bard can really fill in a lot of niches.

The Marshall suggestion is fantastic at 10th level. You can have a minor and a major aura in operation. The Minor aura you want is the extra movement aura, the major one is any attack or damage bonus. Add in the ability to give people an extra move action during the round and bam! You suddnely have a highly mobile party. It might also give you a good hook to join the group ... a military leader type who has been hired/assigned to lead this rag tag bunch (Kelly's Heroes is a great inspiration for this concept).

Even better is Bard/Marshall 2/8. The bard can sing and inspire while givign out auras and controlling the battle.
