A Clash of Earth and Sea (El Jefe Judging) [See Part II]

"We would be happy to get you a trident if that would help, Lord Charlarn."
"That will do just fine. I have some training in the warrior's arts. I can use a trident well enough."
Patlin said:
"Do you command any magic which might be used to circumvent the merrows advantage in reach, or perhaps nullify the magical spells they are likely to employ?"
"The only prayers that I think would work are one that summons a mystical weapon many paces from me and one that summons a porpoise from the Realms Above. Would that help?"
Patlin said:
"Certainly." Moromita send an aid to fetch some spare tridents. "I take it you will wish to seek firm footing at the lake bottom if you do engage the Merrow in battle outside their caves? Unless, of course, you intend to employ magic that will aid your ability to swim?"
"Do you have something that can do that? Fighting in the water is strange to us land-dwellers."

OOC: 4 out of 5 adventurers recommend tridents

"I'll just stay close to Sara and cast spells. I have a spell that allows fighters to move faster, and attack more effectively. I will cast that, then some magic rays. Hopefully we can get out of the water eventually, & I will have some fire spells to cast."

"Summoning creatures and weapons could certainly be usefull, but I don't see how it will negate the Merrow's reach advantage."

"I do not know the secret of it myself, but on the rare occasions merfolk have needed to operate on land, there are tails of using magic to change our shape to give us legs. Cannot your magic accomplish something similar?"

Tridents are provided for all that desire them.

"We cannot give you legs. But if the battle moves to the land, then we will take charge. As for the longspears, I have some spells that can inflict damage beyond that distance. Otherwise, we simply have to take a hit sometimes. Try to flank them when possible. We're ready to go."

OOC: What did we use for a light source last time? Perhaps Iggy should prepare 4 light spells.

Iggy will prepare the following spells:
Level 0 (4+1 div): detect magic(D), light(x2), message(x2)
Level 1 (3+1 int+1 div): mage armor, color spray, True Strike(D), magic missile(x2)
Level 2 (2+1 int+1 div): invisibility, detect thoughts(D), scorching ray(x2)
Level 3 (1+1 int+1 div): Clairaudience/Clairvoyance(D), Haste(x2)

Charlarn of Phyrah: Male human cleric 3/ranger 2

Charlarn accepts his trident gladly. He gives a few thrusts experimentally with it. "I can use this well enough. My thanks."

OOC: Charlarn cast a light spell on his shield at one point. He also has a sunrod. The PHB doesn't say if a sunrod works underwater.

"You misunderstand, I was thinking more along the lines of your giving yourselves fins, rather than your giving us legs. However, if you've done all the plannng you feel is necessary, I will leave you. The forces are still assembling to leave with you tomorrow."

ooc: Somewhat random, but I'm ruling a sunrod doesn't work underwater.

Spending the night under the waves, you prepare spells and make ready for battle. A large force of trident wielding merfolk assembles outside your dome. They have crossbows strapped to their backs and each has a small brace of crossbow bolts. A young merwoman, armed with some sort of harp rather than a trident, swims among the soldiers speaking to each of them in turn.

A merman swims into your enclosure, and announces himself as Genji Tillwara, the commander of the military expedition.

"We are ready to proceed!" he tells you.

Applying more magic from the wand, you join forces and head out. About two thirds of the way to the merrow caves, a merfolk scout swims rapidly up to Genji Tilwara, and quickly reports.

"Halt formation! Crossbows out! The enemy has been sighted and is aproaching!"

Before they leave, Iggy says to the group. "Stay close to me in the beginning of a big battle. I'll try to catch you all in a haste spell."

Once the enemy is spotted, iggy casts Mage Armor on himself, loads his crossbow, and pulls in close behind Sara.

OOC: Is Sara sticking around?
