a curiously overbalanced class, or the worst munchkin class ever in one of my games

You shpuld have given him Monkey Grip, and raised his weapon a size category, perhaps a huge Greatsword 1 handed

Patman, any response to my analysis? I'm curious how it compares to what happened in your game.

Heh - when I tossed one of these at my party, the telepath said "Looks big and stupid! I'll dominate him and make him attack his own allies." :D

When I was putting that guy together I saw lots of different ways my players could take him apart too. Personally I don't think he's over powered at all, but I'm used to seeing something like this in high level play.

I don't think he qualifies as being a serious EL 17. For starters he's missing gear (which in my book would include a ring of spell turning or mind blank or both).

And he really should have the feat awesome blow. And a mount like a rhino or something, which won't actually change the EL.

you, mi amigo, are correct

Hmmm. The evidence seems to suggest that your buddy was using incorrect rules, you're accidentally exaggerating, or I misunderstood you when you said he was "10th ECL" - I'm not sure which. I'm assuming you mean 10th lvl including ECL.

Let's take a look at the class; you can find it most of the way down the page right here. He needed a +5 BAB to get into it, so if you folks were using the +1 ECL half-ogre then he'd qualify once he was a 6th lvl character (5th lvl barbarian.) That means he was a barbarian 5/warhulk 4, was using mighty swing, and had a BAB of +5 (so only one attack a round.) Alternatively, he was a bbn 6/war hulk 3, had two attacks a round at +6/+1, and didn't have access to mighty swing.

Either way, this guy is getting only one attack a round over three spaces: either at +5 BAB with mighty swing, or using a full round action to do a great swing at +6 BAB. Unless his ECL is 11th, he isn't swinging at every square around him no matter what.

I've thought of one other rules error that might have occurred. Each successive square chosen must be adjacent to the previous square and have line of effect from that square. Trolls are large creatures that take up a 10' x 10' square. Since he can only hit three adjacent squares, at most he could only hit two trolls standing right next to one another.

I'm thinking it isn't accurate to call a class over-powered when there's a rules mis-call. :)

The moral of the story might be: never allow in rules you aren't familiar with.

Well, lets start with the fact that I was maybe exaggerating a little. And factor in that, that the character is Barbarian6/Hulk4. Also, did not adjudicate the mighty swing correctly.

All in all, my fault. The character does have a 34 strength..The sheet is upstairs, but I think he is +19/14

Thanks for your hrlp...

So he's an ECL 12 or so, and you complain that he trounces ECL 9 (and low powered for an ECL 9) encounters??

Not quite true. The trolls could be arranged thus:

AABB
AABB
CC
CC

With that arrangement (as if they were surrounding him) he could choose the squares on the inside corner and great/mighty swing three trolls.

Also, Patman, were the trolls 5' x 5', or 10' x 10'? If the 3.0 monster manual was used, those trolls and that half-ogre were 5' x 5'.

All in all, 35 damage a hit is not out of line for a 10th level character.
