A Different View of the Game

No they are not needed.

I have seen on many an occasion people not interested in D&D because the bad/jerk players for whatever reason they were thus. Cutting them made the game more friendly to one or two more people.

Trading a bad/jerk player for a decent player or even two if you are lucky is NEVER a bad thing.

I don't do online videos, so really have no idea what else you are talking about.

I should have been more specific. You do have a point and truly bad/jerk players are bad for the game, and aren't worth having even to get your number of players to satisfactory levels. What I am really talking about is borderline bad/jerk players. Players who cause problems, but not so much that they need to be gotten rid of. 3E was a fragile game that could be broken by borderline players.

D20 system is a sytem that needs classes IMO. Its combat rules will make point buy a min maxing excercise. If you do not want classes tie abilities to other more open factors that are tied to adventure (think of guilds and the like). Heroquest/runequest is build on this concept (you gain powers from how your tribe regards you). If I remember correctly dragonlance saga was build like this too (knight orders and the like)
