A few questions...

Darkloke

First Post
Hello, people! Please, can you answer some questions regarding creatures?

1. In the demilich description said that he can trap the souls of living creatures... But what types of creatures count as "living"? Can he, for example, soultrap the outsider or plant or vermin?

2. In the tarrasque description said that he can swallow the whole creature... Again, what type of creatures he can swallow? Undead? Constucts? Please, explain this to me.

3. In the article of MM 3,5 there is an article "Improving monsters" and there is a table "Increase damage with size", but it seems it doesnt cover the very big sizes like gargantuan and colossal, so can you tell me the further progression of damage?

Thanks in advance!

According to the D&D glossary, "Any creature with a Constitution score is a living creature. Constructs and undead are not living creatures." So yes, outsiders, plants and vermin are all fair game for a demilich.

The description of the tarrasque's Swallow Whole ability just says "opponent of Huge or smaller size" with no restrictions on the type of creature. So I'd say that a Huge or smaller Undead or Construct can be swallowed.

That table is independent of the size of the creature you are advancing. The size of the creature isn't important, only how many size categories it is being advanced, and the amount of damage it does.

For example:
  • An Assassin Vine is usually Large, and does 1d6+7 damage, which is 1d6 base damage, plus +7 from 1.5 times its Strength bonus of +5 (I think).
  • Advancing it from Large to Huge, means the base damage increases from 1d6 to 1d8. And using Table 4-2, it gets +8 to Strength, so the new damage will be 1d8+13.
  • Advancing it further from Huge to Gargantuan, the base damage goes up from 1d8 to 2d6 (Table 4-3), and it gets another +8 to Strength, for a new damage output of 2d6+19.
  • Advancing it again from Gargantuan to Colossal, the base damage increased from 2d6 to 3d6, and it gets yet another +8 to Strength for a final damage total of 3d6+25.
(Someone else please check my maths, I regularly get this wrong.)

Does that help?

Outsiders are a little iffy as their soul and body are one entity. Perhaps the soul isn't drawn from the body into the demilich but both the soul and body are drawn in? :)

I see... I just thought there was any special remarks about soul, because vermin and plant with soul... seems a little bit strange. :)

So I'd say that a Huge or smaller Undead or Construct can be swallowed.
Oh, sorry for wrong quote... But nevertheless i still think that it is strange to eat undead or constructs. But may be not for tarraqque. :)

Yes, i understand all this. But what about, for example, iron golem, which has 2d10 at huge size, so what will he have at gargantuan size? 3d10?

Does that help?
Yes, thank you very much. But i think i will return with more questions... :)

Actually, no. There is no difference game-mechanically. The rest is just flavor text. As long as a creature possesses a Constitution score, it is considered "living" and thus susceptable to the ability. One could argue that intelligent undead still have souls and outsiders may not, but because the description of the ability makes no such exceptions, use the rules as written.

That said, you could very easily house rule its effects on other creatures that may have odd soul-based descriptions.

I think (but am not entirely sure) that the 2d10 damage of a Large iron golem becomes 4d8 if the golem is advanced to Huge, since each 1d10 becomes 2d8 according to Table 4-3.

Perhaps one of our more experienced resident monster statisticians could confirm that?

You are probably right, since i now noticed that for stone golem such thing it is: large 2d10 -> huge 4d8.

And one request... If i will post the creature pictures from one game... Can you tell me who are they or do they have analogs in D&D (since i dont know a lot D&D creatures)?
