Because people like the books. Frankly, I was not as thrilled with Black Company as others were though I really like Blue Rose. My excitemtn really comes more from the fact that it is GoO that is writing this. They do some really great work and just don't seem to get the recognition of some larger yet not as good companies.

I'd say they get the recognition they deserve for their tri-stat products--i see a lot of recognition, just not aronud here. But if you mean specifically D20 System, yeah, GoO and Atlas seem to be noticably under-appreciated.

Anyway, if it weren't GoO, i probably wouldn't even give it a second thouht. But, like you said, they do good work, generally. I'm not much of a fan of cyberpunk genre, but am glad i looked at Ex Machina. That said, "because GoO is writing it" really dosen't tell me anything about why aGoT is any more interesting than any other fantasy setting out there.

There are several different reasons why people are hankering for this:

- Firstly, most George R.R. Martin fans have been starved of material for the last five years. Unfortunately, George had some issues getting book four how he wanted it. As such, any material, particularly with a certain level of George's input is very much wanted. It would not be surprising for people to buy this who have never rpg'd before, just so they can get a closer look at some of the mysteries of the Game of Thrones world of Westeros and beyond.

- Secondly, the world as layed out in the book series is so rich in detail with so many layers of information and intrigue, it would make the perfect setting for a campaign for those who roleplay rather than rollplay (although I'm sure both types of players will be catered for).

- Thirdly, for those who like what I term "rare" magic (not low), it is of a style that many DM's out there are forced to homebrew.

- Fourthly, many people rate the A Song of Ice and Fire series as one of if not their favourite series of books. If you have not read the series (which I will assume for the moment), then may I suggest you do so. It will speak a reason to get this campaign setting that my simple explanations cannot. I envy the enjoyment you will have reading this series for the first time.

Oh, I can... AFfC, hands down. But even more than that, ADwD, because everyone I like will be in that book. *sigh*
Not for me. Tyrion, Arya and even the returned Catelyn speak of the revenge I crave. Not to say that I'm not looking forward to A Dance with Dragons, I'm looking forward to that one too. ;)

Tyrion and Arya will be in ADwD.
Catelyn will NOT be a PoV character in AFfC.

For those interested in the A Song of Ice and fire series I suggest reading "The Hedge Knight" short story. It appeared in the Legends anthology, you can probably find it in a library near you.

The short story (and its sequel "The Sworn Sword" in Legends II) take place 100 years before the start of A Game of Thrones. The stories aren't connected to main novels, but they give a really good introduction to the world of Westeros and to GRRM's writing style. You can finish "The Hedge Knight" easily in an afternoon, and then decide if you want to take up "A Game of Thrones".

Ya don't like Samwell Tarly? I thought everyone liked poor Sam! That and Asha, mmmmm.

Though to be fair she's in both.

I'm really really looking forward to the Cersei chapters myself. I basicly think of her as a Bizarro Tyrion.

That and the mystery PoVs.

The short story The Hedge Knight (and its sequel "The Sworn Sword" in Legends II)

Be careful ordering "Legends" online. Amazon lists three different versions (you have to check the "table of contents" from the online excerpt of each book to make sure it's got the George RR Martin stories in it!):

1) One version of Legends contains all 11 stories (including The Hedge Knight).

2) One version of Legends has only 4 stories (not including The Hedge Knight).

3) The companion to this other version is idiotically titled Legends II (note that it's the Roman Numerals "II", and not simply Legends 2). It contains 4 stories (including The Hedge Knight).

4) The sequel to The Hedge Knight (The Sworn Sword) is in Legends 2 (not Legends II).

This is one of the most confusing and stupid decisions by a publisher I've ever seen. So just be very sure which version of which book you're getting if you want the George RR Martin stories!
