A Gaming Table My Wife Will Let Me Have

Hey, when did this thread stop being fun?

A few posts ago but I'm sure that digression is over.

I got to see the Sultan at GenCon last year and it was totally sweet. Rather out of my price range though.

The Universe has a really sweet game table that he made himself and was a couple orders of magnitude cheaper. It's built around a 4'x8' plywood top that is recessed by about a half inch with a battlemat under plexiglass. It doesn't have any extra space around the edges to put books and character sheets (his one lament about how he might design it if he had it to do over) but the play surface is so large that this isn't that big a deal.

I'll have to hit Gen Con this year. Hopefully they'll have it there again, though with the economy the way it is, I sort of doubt it. I would like to see one up close and personal, though. There was a post a page back or so that mentioned the 8 inch depth of the recess, which seems a bit deep to me. A half inch should suffice (like the one you described), though about 1.5 inches would be perfect for my needs.

Maybe something similar to what you describe with shelves built in below the game surface.

Well, there are plans for The Avenger table are sold rather cheap at the site in my sig, it is no where near the beautiy of The Sultan, but it's much more affordable even if you spend money for higher quality wood and finish. No, the site and table aren't mine, I just plug it for a friend.

As for the Sultan it's self, wow! It is a thing of beauty, indeed. But that price tag... It certainly gives me some ideas for when/if I build my own fully functional Ultimate gaming Table, but I'm not paying that much for it. Also it is so fancy, that it's not likely to fit with the decor of most peoples gaming room, which of course means more money to make the thing 'fit in'.

The Sultan is very posh, but I have to say the Avenger seems more practical and functional.
