A Good Game System

Hey all,

I'm looking for an RPG. Not just any RPG, mind you, but a special one.

I'm looking for one with more fluff than crunch, a game that supports a more freestyle, cinematic form of gameplay.

Something that emphasizes a character's background and personality over blocks of numbers.

Any and all feedback should be helpful.... unless it involves that time cube RPG... or the Wuthering Heights one.

Many thanks.

QAGS, by hexgames. It's totally simple and the books run foir about 5$ a piece.

Feng Shui. God, i love this game. Go here to download "Six in the Chamber", a summary of a Feng Shui EN Boards game that I played in and Dr. Midnight ran. Good stuff.

Rolemaster. Or Aftermath, if you want to get really crunch-lite.

:D

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for brain damage resulting from attempts to run a game of either. ;)

Simple and fluffy? Rolemaster? Simple and fluffy? Heh heh heh... maybe migraine inducing...

Actually the Storyteller games are real fluffy and slightly crunchy and cover almost any genre from Gothic Horror to SUperheroics to PUlp Adventure to Brutal nature. I really suggest Trinity as it is cheap at 14.95 and extremely fluffy. The whole Aeon COntinuum is very nice though Abberant (the superhero line) tried to hard to be avant garde and edgy.

For fantasy, especially epic fantasy I would very HIGHLY suggest Exalted, get the two hardbacks Exalted and Dragonblooded. Both are really kickin. I sold mine because my players are hardcore D20 crowd but I really enjoyed it. COuld easily run the epic adventure of a Greek Tragedy or some fantasy ANime with this game.

There is also Big Eyes Small Mouth which can be adapted to any genre, very similar to Hero in execution without all the math. Combat is very swift and easy to do. Just a simple, easy game. Not to mention it is the same system that was used for SIlver AGe Sentinels which is fast becoming the greatest SUperhero RPG of all time... I have yet to see it myself.

ANyway, there are some options for you. Trinity is the best deal in the bunch with it's dinky pricetag and amazing setting. Supplements are still easy to find and are excellent overall.

More fluff than crunch?

Depends on what you plan to do with it. But I'd recommend any of the following:

Lejendary Adventure

Castle Falkenstein

Over the Edge

Talislanta

Go Talislanta! Whoo hoo! :)

Yeah, it's kinda like D&D, only simpler. Thing is, the rules can be very oriented to the default setting, and though I love the setting, you might not.

Heck, I play D&D fast and loose. Today I actually ran the game with no character sheets or rulebooks, because I picked up the wrong bag. All we did was have everyone recall their hit points, AC, and attack bonuses as best as they could, and for anything else I just said, "Roll." Depending on how dangerous it was, I'd just guess whether they'd succeed. We had a great time, and the only real slowdown came when I had to point out to the party's bard that a fear-causing effect wouldn't frighten a villain who's got more than 6 Hit Dice.

Which reminds me, I hate fear spells. They so ruin dramatic encounters. :)

I would say:

Castle Falkenstein

Herowars/HeroQuest by Issaries.
Its a easy system there are only two problems:
1) Its written as a very world specific game ( but it is NOT), so you need to read between the world references)
2) The rules are very easy and flexible but the way they are explained in the book, they are really hard! If you figure out how they work they are dead easy :)
It really is worth the search :D
