D&D General A Gruumsh Of A Different Type

So, he’s a god of Fury, War, Destruction, and Orcs.

Can we make a Neutral god out of that? Or maybe even an evil god that mortals would not just placate out of fear?

What about a god of Wrath, The Wild, and Retribution? I can imagine characters of any alignment (Lawful being the least natural fit) worshipping such a god.

What about other “monstrous race” gods?

The Nilbog is an example of a chaotic neutral trickster. Extrapolate a semi-Fey related god of Freedom, Trickery, maybe Craft, with a penchant of playing very cruel tricks on those that “deserve” it.

One of the bugbear gods could be reimagined as a god of The Hunt, Shadows, and Nature, with an affinity with tall trees and dropping out of then to gank prey.

Any other thoughts?

Focus on the bits that stand out. Take ol' Ares for example. Athens wasn't a big fan of him and portrayed him as a god of savage warfare, the forces of war to disrupt. But, he's basically Mars to the Romans who was a lot more respected, the effects of war to bring peace

Gruumsh is the father of orcs. He's a god of fighting against the enemies of orcs, be they good or evil. Those two alone are easy to turn into a protective aspect.

In the generic god topic, I theorized gods of a feudal system.

  • Gods of Kings
  • Gods of Priests
  • Gods of Nobles
  • Gods of Warriors
  • Gods of Peasants

In it the old war gods we knew were now Gods of different aspects of combat and battle. Either by weapon or type of warrior.

The whole conflict between them was either that the god of knights (a noble god) either died, disappeared, or never existed. So the god of Kings has to raise up one the the Warrior gods to take the portfolio of Knights. Either the god of kings does and the other warrior gods become jealous or the god of kings is waiting for the warrior gods to prove themselves.

Basically Gruumsh is less evil and more the war god of one type of combat. He comes to and offers orcs to being the perfect warriors of that type. In ths world Gruumush fights gods like Maglubiyet's goblins as much as Corellon's elves.

orcs are Neanderthals viewed as a savage devolved state of humanity, Gruumsh is the savage nature of humanity, rage, bloodlust, strength, endurance against adversity and rejection of weak civility. Gruumsh is honoured by barbarians, survivors and those who seek freedom from civilisation

Gruumsh as a god of fury, destruction, and battle works. He represents the chaos, destruction, and unpredictability that exists in battle as well as the fury and adrenaline that pushes soldiers of all peoples forward. Yes, there is slaughter too, but battle is rarely pretty or won without bloodshed, particularly the bloodshed of infantry. Generals and nobles may offer prayers to gods of strategy and conquest, but the rank and file soldiers of the world who bleed and have battle scars call upon Gruumsh. Gruumsh One-Eyed was injured on the frontlines of combat and therefore knows pain of the soldier unlike the war gods of the backline or generals who bark orders from the safety of their camps. To be a god of bloodshed is not only to celebrate the blood shed by foes but also the blood shed by you and your allies to win victory.
