A little help with a build

Just some advice, Im making a Halfling outrider for a game and were starting at 1st level. 34 point buy. Stout halfling as my sub-race. I'm pretty sure I want to start as a ranger. Any suggestions from the mighty ENworld brains?

Oooo ... the game is up! Or at least about to come up....

Anything else you can tell us about the type of adventure you are going to playing in or the party dynamic? Or you have no clues?

And would your choice of being a ranger have to do with either of these? Or your own choice?

Hmm. Bad for a mounted combatant but Scout/Ranger with Swift Hunter is simply awesome.

Natural Bond comes to mind, this feat will keep your animal companion alive a long time.

I would check with your DM before building a character around a mount. Ask him what the ratio of dungeon crawling to outdoors will be. If it's not 75% outdoors to 25% dungeon then you probably will want to avoid it. Even with a Medium mount it's hard to take advantage of Ride-by-Attack, Mounted Archery, etc. while in a building or dungeon area.

As far as a build. The Mounted Combat tree is fairly weak. I wouldn't go beyond Mounted Combat/Ride-by-Attack or Mounted Archery. Spirited Charge and Trample are okay at low levels but once you get more than one attack you lose more than you gain by just staying close and using Full Attacks from you and your mount.

I would recommend going Scout 4/Ranger 1 and taking your scout level at level 5, so you can take Swift Hunter as your bonus feat(Other order does not matter much) Then go scout 5 and take Improved Skirmish at 6th level. Go outrider after that. You will be one BAB down, but that does not matter much, as you will not be making intinerative attacks much if at all.

Also be sure to pick undead as one of your favored enemies so you can skirmish them.

After this, you can do incredible damage with just about any weapon in any situation. Ride by attack and skirmish is awesome, and easier on the feats than Dodge and mobility, though it will limit you to dogback, which is not really a problem in most dungeons. In any case, Skirmish and such is not that good in dungeons anyway.

Allow me to disagree.

First: Scout/Ranger with Swift Hunter is great, no recommendation.
Second: Skirmish and Imp Skirmish is good for dealing damage but your mounts movement does not count, e.g. no skirmishing while being mounted. So no Ride-by-Attack with skirmish.
Third: Get a spider as mount as a halfling or other small race. You'll see in most dungeons that climbing on the ceiling and shooting down is fun.
Fourth: Mounted combat may be suboptimal, but not for an archer. Having your mount stay mobile while you dish out full attack actions at range is useful.

Another point: Get a light Crossbow with Rapid Reload and the Crossbow Sniper feat if you can't get a high strength and dex (necessary for archers). Skirmish range to 60 ft and additional damage due to dex rocks.

PS: I prefer usually to take the second ranger level earlier and take Scout4 at level 6, that way you can take Imp Skirmish and Swift Hunter together... one level later, but you'll enjoy Rapid Shot for a much longer time. Since you're mounted, Rapid Shot is more useful to you than skirmish.
