Warlord isn't "a satisfactory alternative" either, IMO, so I don't think that argument floats.

Marshal isn't either IMO - it is, as someone pointed out, a good name for a wild west class, but not D&D.
Alternative to....?

And near as I recall marshal worked fine in the Minis Handbook, though I suppose there might have been some controversy at the time, I wasn't around here then.

Find myself wondering if the 'halfling sheriff' gets the same 'Wild West' disdain, though.

I've always considered ENWorld something like a big family.

I love coming here and reading peopls thoughts and getting devious ideas and sharing some of my own. I would be very sad if this place were to go away. Other gaming message boards just don't have the same atmosphere.

This place is home.

As you know, though, families do not always get along. There are gripes and complaints and disagreements and sometimes big arguments.

It's the same here.

Some members of the family are upset. Some are angry. Some have valid reasons. Some are just being irrational as human beings tend to be, either in their rapid dislike of a system they haven't seen yet or their rapid defense of the same.

Do you really want some members of this big family to stop feeling as though they can speak their minds?

Do you really want to shut them up?

That doesn't seem like a family to me.

Not at all.

Alternative to....?
My point was just because it has squatter rights (well, arguably Marshal does) doesn't give it some cookie that any unpopular alternative has...except maybe in WOTC's eyes, because they chose it. It's unpopular too.

Not a core PHB class. Easily ignored if it's not your speed. Same for the sheriff (although "halfling sheriff" makes more sense than marshal, because halflings apparently have shires if you consider FR or Tolkien).

It does to me. I don't want my family to drone on and on and on about aunt Gertie's old lawn ornament that uncle Peter stole, although he claims it was his all the time.

They can take that argument to another room, thank you. :D

Indeed.

What I find most amusing, are the fanbois (an intentional counter to the derogatory 'grognard') who praise 4e as if it were the second coming, when they have not seen it either. They have very little information, yet have decided they like the new system and sing its praise, yet those who have the same information and decided they do not like it should not voice their concerns?

Hey, look at that. Fanboi/grognard insults. You guys know better.

Here's the deal, folks. Universally kicking people out of the 4e forums because they don't like the new edition is an extremely slippery slope. What happens when someone who loves the new warlord decides that he doesn't, say, like how initiative works? Do we boot him?

Frankly, I don't see it happening. People are going to sway both ways on the "I like 4e" continuum, both to and fro, and we're not going to kick them just because this week they're less excited about the game. Besides, intolerance goes both ways. Read some of the posts further up this thread.

We'll certainly boot people who are continually ranting (hi, Razz!), rude, disruptive and insulting. Be sure to report these cases using the "report a post" function at the bottom left of every post. But when you run across people who always seem to annoy you, that's a perfect opportunity for the Ignore feature. Use it, love it, embrace it -- and take responsibility for your own enjoyment of the forum.

Meanwhile, a challenge for everyone: think about what you write. Are you repeating the same old message you always say? If so, then maybe it's not needed. Be courteous of others, and always try to improve the signal-to-noise ratio here instead of decreasing it. Try not to take comments personally, and keep a sense of humor!

Care to elaborate? Since I posted a contrary opinion to yours, I don't really understand your post.

The guy in your userpic has a HUGE smile. It's really unnerving, actually. :uhoh:
