A Mythic Earth

That post was a year ago… to the day.

anyway, a mythic setting can have non-mythical things in it. Like coconuts and badgers and bridges and Julius Caesar. In my mind Caesar is pretty iconic.
Not my fault!

It's 'Alexander74' The Great who did the necro thread raising. 🙃

But you do you, if you want Caesar to be mythical, just do it.

I like for the US, the stories of Washington Irving (Rip Van Winkle and fairies stories, for example). Also of course the huge panoply of Indigenous people's stories. There are also the various myths and magics of the enslaved people who brought with them their own mythologies that then mingled with what was already here and created their own unique new mythology.

How about forgotten lands, such as Mu, Lemuria, and Atlantis?

I don't know enough about Africa to provide mythologies from those lands; but I'm sure there are sources and it's a rich trove.

I think if I were going for Mythic Europe, I'd definitely head in the direction of some kind of dreamscape that would allow me to combine different ages and myths in one place. I love the idea of, for example, Druids, Robin Hood, King Arthur, and Victorian ideas of the Fae and whatever else existing in a mythic England. I think of that as essentially humanity's collected dreams of a place, all mashed up side by side. I haven't done a dreamscape type setting, but I'd like to, and this is close to the top of my list as an approach.

Somewhere in a closet I've got a old folder where I researched African legends for use in my homebrew, in particular the Epics of Sundiata Keita (Mali Empire) and the legend of Ryangombe (Hutu) stand out. I advocate for anyone interested in Africa to look at the Sahel rather than further south as their Medieval Empires are amazing -In Kanem-Bornu they even have horse mounted knights in mail armour.

As for the Americas I've used John Henry and Joe Magerac as inspiration for Supers and have been thinking about a game where all the Tall Tales are true. the Alvin Maker series makes for good inspiration too

Hiya!
If you were to create a setting based on the real world's mythology, what would you include?

I'm thinking that each country (or area) might have iconic era, and the 'mythic world' has each of those areas at their most iconic historical time.

For example in Europe --

Britain might be in the Dark Ages, with Arthurian Knights, fey, druids, etc.

Greece might be in the age of Heroes, with Achilles, Herakles, atc. (these are very broad, generic periods)

Dracula is in Transylvania.

Thor is smashing giants in Scandinavia.

Julius Caesar is crushing Gaul.

If you had to draw a world map and pick each area's mythic iconic ages, what would they be?

Easy... "Dangerous Journeys: The Epic of Ærth". That's my go-to for "real-world fantasy earth".

To be honest, that would imo only result in a disjointed mess and be more of a B-Movie parody than in something mythic and awe inspiring.
