G'day folks!

When you or your local DM starts up a new game (campaign, mini-campaign or single adventure), what level do you start at?

Is it always 1st level?
Is it sometimes at low levels?
Do you sometimes begin play at high level?

(And with this, I include ECL. If your group start out as ogres, you'd probably be in the moderate levels...)

Cheers!

I start my own campaigns at whatever level seems appropriate for the story I have in mind, so I can't really answer that poll;)

I start all PCs with a NPC class (Aristocrat, Expert, Warrior, Adept) countered as ECL -1, before their PC class (so they effectively start at level 1 but already have a minor class level) eg Pako the Fisherman is an Expert 1/Ranger 1

Choose any option but "Always at first level". Choose the highest group you've used. :)

Cheers!

Technically, 1st. But the players hate it with a passion, so I use their greed for levels to assist in creating well rounded characters. They get bonus xp for histories, character descriptions, general details about homelands, family trees, usuable NPC concepts attached to their char, etc. Usually this puts them in the low level area.

Anything that gets PCs to invest more in their characters generally is excellent for the game. :)

Cheers!

Why is 1st level the only one that is ALWAYS? Why can't it be occasionally, like the others?

I prefer 1st level, but there's something to be said for starting at 2nd-4th. Any higher than that is usually a one-shot.

My circle usually does about 10% 1st level, 60% 3rd, 20% 5th, and 10% other levels. For some reason, we really like level 3. Dunnowhy.
