Well, I broke down and bought the DVD to watch, mostly out of curiosity. Personally I liked the movie. Overall it was a faithful remake of the original series.

Here are some odds and ends about it.

Freddy is a different character than in the original movies. He is far more serious and doesn't seem to quip a lot of jokes. Taunting is not truly the same thing as joking and making bad puns.

There was no house on Elm street where he died.

I would've like better if they kept the twist they were insinuating. For a while there they were insinuating that Freddy was an actual innocent victim who was falsely accused of his crimes. That would've been a nice twist and made him seem more sympathetic. And, this time around they seem to gave made him a molester as much as a killer.

During the Freddy Kreuger Reborn segment on the DVD I got, one of the makers said a curious thing. He said that the movie never really explained his background. But if he'd seen all five of the movies, he'd realize that "Freddy's Dead" did go into his background, quite a bit. Not to mention the series did reveal who his mother was as well. Not to mention the revelation of the dream spirits that gave him his powers.

It remains to be seen if sequel movies will keep this background intact.

Overall I enjoyed it. I give it a B.

Also, the final sequence was essentially the same as Phantasm.
