A pixie, a woodpecker, and a unicorn walk into a bar... What's the punchline?

A special group of friends all take the day off to reunite for a picnic. It's a lovely summer morning, but something strange may be happening back at work and home...

I started playing again last year after most of two decades off. Last week, the campaign I'd been playing in officially went on hiatus. I've gone way (way, way!) out on a limb and offered the one-shot adventure seed below on our next game night. I wanted to brag a little here before the enormity of what I'm biting off sinks in.

I already have some ideas for plot and assorted roleplay hooks, but I'd love to hear better ideas from the astonishing and hopefully twisted minds at EN World. :)

The characters are:

The dashing otter with the rapier

The pious and pretty (if undersized) unicorn

The clockwork woodpecker (Wizard's familiar)

The cat with the very interesting hat (Bard's familiar)

The sapling Ent and his treasured battleaxe

The Barbie-with-butterfly-wings-and-levels-in-warmage (Pixie)

All are familiar-ed, animal companions, or cohorts, with class levels, awakenings, templates, age regression and outright 'runting' where appropriate. Their PCs are about level 11, but basically offstage the whole time, so the players will be dealing at around CR 7-9.

Any ideas? Please run with it!

Well, what if one of the old foes of the PCs has an ally among the Unseelie Court who wishes to do the PCs and their home communityharm? The cohorts and familiars learn of this while the PCs are busy elsewhere and out of contact, so they have to step up to the occassion. (Think of the situation in the comics where Batman is busy elsewhere, and Robin and the other allies of the Dark Knight have to step up and deal with a rough situation.) So, this is a chance for the "lesser heroes" of the gorup to shine -- and perhaps further enhance their prestige and that of their associates.

If you work it well, this adventure could be used to foreshadow some things in future games.

I would realize that this game is meant for comedy only, so why not go with an old tradition of having "normalcy" threaten the existence of the fantasy world and have your one-shot a three- to five-parter (like a made for TV movie or series)?

Or, read up on some of the Myth series of books to look for a sci-fi take on the silliness that should occur in such a game.
