A question about a 7-th level character

First Post
Hello,

We are going to start a new campaign soon [for 7-th level characters] and I would like to play a character with the following traits:
Holy warrior, preferably a cleric.
- I have never played as a cleric before, so I intend to use cleric spells to boost fighting skills of the character [and the group] and to alter the battlefield to our advantage.
- Spellcasting abilities of paladins seem very weak [the low caster level is plain silly].
Good fighting skills.
- No-frills style, efficient combatant [I do not have enough feat slots to invest into more tactical and technical feats].
- Reasonable strength and dexterity.
- Lightly armored [to reduce armor check penalties and use evasion later].
Highly skilled.
- Fighting evil is a matter of diplomacy in the first place [full ranks in Diplomacy, Heal and Knowledge(Religion)].
- Full ranks in Concentration and Spellcraft [helpful for spellcasters].
- Half of the full rank in Listen and Spot [because I like it].
- Several ranks in Balance, Climb, Jump, Swim and Tumble [it fits the character in my opinion].

This is what I have come up with so far:
- Ftr[2] Clr[5], Human.
- Domains: Travel and War.
- Str 14 * Dex 14 * Con 10 * Int 14 * Wis 15 * Cha 14 (32 point buy + 1 stat increase at the 4-th level).
- Feats: Able Learner, Blind-Fight, Combat Expertise, Power Attack, Improved Initiative, Improved Trip, Weapon Focus [from the War domain].
- Candidate feats: Lightning Reflexes, Improved Disarm, Knockdown.
- Skill points: 5 per level.

Basic equipment:
- A +1 ranseur [alchemical silver] and masterwork net [the net might be useful even without the proficiency].
- A +1 longsword.
- A +1 mithral shirt [no armor penalties].
- A +1 large mithral shield.
- Potions of Expeditious Retreat.
- Potions of Enlarge Person.
- Potions of Mage Armor and Shield [useful against enemies with touch attacks or when - fighting with the ranseur].
- Potions of Blur, Mirror Image and Invisibility.
- Potions of Fly.

Comments:
- I intend to use Improved Disarm, Improved Trip and Knockdown later with the Divine Power and Righteous Might spells.

Questions:
- What combination of classes would suit such a character best?
- What cleric spells are best for improving fighting skills? For manipulating battlefield?
- Is there any way to get more skill points per level [besides raising intelligence or changing race]?
- Is it better to invest stat increases in strength or in wisdom?
- Can War domain grant Weapon Focus in an exotic weapon [like bastard sword].
- I was thinking about investing some skill points in the Use Magic Device skill. Is this skill useful?

Thanx in advance.

Hello,

I would recommend a straight Cleric... almost nothing is worth losing caster levels for.. YMMV.

Divine favour, shield of faith, stat buffs, magic vestment, divine power, righteous wrath of the faithful, righteous might... etc.

let the Druid or Wizard do this...

there's the Open Minded feat in C.Adv.

Yes... if that is your Deity's weapon.

Not unless you plan on investing a lot of points... here's the chart.

Depending how set you are on Cleric, you might also want to consider the Crusader from Tome of Battle: Book of 9 Swords. It does the holy warrior shtick extremely well... and gets 4 skill points/level with a decent skill list.

If you want to, you could also take Cleric levels 1-5 and Crusader levels 6-7, picking up some nice level 2 maneuvers instead of the Fighter feats.

Losing out on cleric caster levels hurts... but less so if you really focus on using your spells to boost your own combat ability. The problem is that the temptation is there to branch out, spell-wise...

Agreed.

I am playing multiple clerics in different games right now. My 12th level cleric, when properly buffed, can pretty much outfight anyone in the party, as well as drop the smack with holy smites, flame strikes and blade barriers.

If you really want to be multiclass in this one (instead of straight cleric) then drop the fighter levels and go with barbarian instead.

You lose 2 feats but get more hit points, more skill points, faster movement, uncanny dodge and the ability to rage.

If you want lighter armors to reduce armor check penalties this is the class for it - since they get their faster movement only when wearing medium or lighter armor anyway.

Switch to power attack and 2 handed weapon fighting style for maximum damage.

Pretty much not that many things more dangerous than a raging barbarian with a great axe (or great sword) using power attack and if you are enlarged. . . . .
