A question about taking feats

Emongnome

First Post
Can a character take feats that they don't have the prereq for? Example: A non-human druid will have access to 2 feats before gaining Wild Shape ability. Is that druid allowed to take the Wild feats before gaining the ability? Of course, they can't USE the feat until the prereq's are met. I guess this would also apply to feats with ability score requirements that won't be met until the character can raise the appropriate score. Another way to do it is to allow the characters to hold onto feats without chosing them until they want to, but I don't know the rule on that as well. Thanks! :D

(Edit: had two questions, think I answered one)

No, you can only take feats when you qualify for them, and you can not hold feats until you qualify for the feats you want.

By the Rules, no. You can't hold skill points, or feat slots, or anything. A rogue can't take Weapon Finess at 1st level, while waiting for it to 'kick in' at 2nd.

However, it doesn't make a bad house rule. ;)

On a similar note, has there been any rules on taking a feat that you only qualify for sometimes? Like power attack when your strength is 9, but you're a barbarian (ie - can make the 13+ when you rage). Presumably you'd lose the feat when you're not raging, but can you even take it in the first place?

If you're raging at the time you level, sure. ;)

You're perment stats have to qualify. Same for feats and skill points.

The rules are not explicite in this area

Exactly. I don't have a problem with someone taking a feat that has a stat requirement they they qualify for because of a magic item that constantly adds +whatever to their stat. It's not very reliable. Every time that magic item is suppressed, or if it's lost, you lose access to the feat anyways.

so I take the catious road.

Dispel magic is pretty cautious. :D
