From what I've read, it seems that a core rule of portals/gates is that a creature or object is either completely through it or is not at all through it. For instance, a dragon can't snake his head through a portal and look around while his body is still on the other side. He either steps completely to the other side, or he does not pass at all.
Say the PCs come to a magic portal to another place/dimension/whatever. They tie a rope around the "bravest" character. While the other PCs hold the end of the rope, the brave PC steps through the gate. What happens with the rope?
Can the other PCs pull the explorer back into the Material Plane? Does the rope become severed? What?
