A successful "Realms-Shaking-Event"?

Time spans between the introduction of a setting and various "realms shaking event(s)".

For Forgotten Realms:
- first "grey box" release -> time of troubles, was slightly less than two years
- time of troubles -> spellplague, was around 19 years.

in my opinion the njo + legacy series are by far the best star wars series in the expanded universe

Legacy I haven't read yet (except I think some Starwars Saga stuff), but what I heard about it sounds interesting.

NJO I read all books, and I have mixed feeling and, overall, I am unhappy with it. It has some high points, but also many lows.

But this might be a good example with "RSE"s in general - sure, people complain and bitch, but they still buy the line, so it doesn't really matter. The sales are what is important. And the NJO line certainly had my sales, despite my misgivings about it.

Of course, Timothy Zahn got even more sales from me - thanks to his superb Star Wars books, I also checked out his Black Collar series (and I liked that, too.)

I was just wondering, if a RSE has never been entirely successful, why do companies insist on doing them?

"Gotta keep it fresh! Gotta keep it interesting! Gotta attract that new market segment! All the fans will buy it even if they hate it!"

Essentially: because they lack the testicular fortitude to make something brand new, they have to screw with the stuff that already exists and has a market. ;)
