A 'Tank' Suggestion.

I have joined a game with many newbies(all of them but me and the DM); and last game ended in disaster.

I had rolled a Sorcerer early that day and brought him. Everyone else(I mean EVERYONE out of eight people) were either a Druid, a Ranger, or a Rogue.

(Three Druids, two rangers, two rogues. OH, and all built for ranged combat)

To make it clear how new they were, two of druids took the run feat.

We were level five. We ran into a troll and got uber raped cause we are squishy.

I was asked to make a tanky type character, something I have never done. Worse off, I'm not allowed to use the Knight class. I'm only allowed to use the Players Handbook and ANY prestige class from any book. Fifth level.

I'm a caster type of guy, and this has proven to be a lot harder then I expected. Help?

Good point. My DM is gonna hate me for making another druid, but I'll do it.

Rather than antagonizing your DM and effectively telling the other players "You all suck at playing druids, here's how you do it right" (however much you might think that's a good idea) I'd suggest trying a lockdown build instead. Your basic Combat Reflexes/Karmic Strike spiked chain wielder can protect multiple teammates and do a fair bit of damage to boot. I'm assuming the PHB restriction is only for classes; if it's for feats as well, you won't be as effective but you won't suck either, and it seems your party is setting the bar low on that front.

What about an eldritch knight in a mithral breastplate or something? I know it's not the most original idea in the world or the most OP build but it gives you some survivability and still be able to cast a bit.

Or Monk (kong-fu genius)/Wizard/Abjurant champion(so you can get greater luminus armor)/Swiftblade or Master Transmografist.

I know, but I don't think it would be that high. It wouldn't be as if the group is absolutely counting on his spells to go off or face a TPK. Also, isn't there an enhancement for armor that lowers the spell failure rate? I can't remember what it is, but I am certain there is something like that out there.

If you're that concerned with armor, cast mage armor or greater mage armor.
