A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

One thing I always liked from 1e were the level titles - even if they weren't used in play, just having them in the book gives a wonderful sense of flavour!
A wonderful sense of Eurocentric flavor.

What would be the level titles for an Asian-Indian ranger?

I'm rather ambivalent on the idea of the level titles. On one hand, they were pretty cool, on the other hand, having the game designers dictate my campaign to me didn't sit very well. I was never much into the idea that D&D should be this or that, so, honestly, the titles thing got chucked out the window PDQ.

What does that combat example have to do with a unified XP chart?

Nothing. You'll note that the entire first post is about how a fan likes to pretend the older XP system works (in-character), as opposed to how it actually does work (in real life). Basically, the OP likes the old way better than the new because it's easier for him to reconcile with his idea of fun. And that's all there is to it, really.

Although, it was never really dictating. (Not that I'm denying that it might have seemed as such to you.) It was more like how my professors taught me to leave "I think" & "it is my opinion" out as redundant whenever it was clear what I was writing was opinion. They said, "Here's how we play it; but make it your own."

Now, I realize that there was some rhetoric that seemed to be the opposite of that, but to me it was always a matter of degrees. There were some people whose "making it there own" went so far afield of how the Lake Geneva crowd played that they hardly recognized the game anymore. But, taken as a whole, the attitude I always got from the early TSR was, "Anything [...] should be thought of as changeable".

BTW this is a d20 site. Go have a grognard whine fest elsewhere. I dont whine on the white wolf sites how I dont like the storyteller system, or troll the castles and crusades forums on how I think the system is for people who just want dumbed down D&D.

I believe this is the general rpg discussion forum. Not the D20 or get the F out forum.

I hate hate hated the old XP system. The whole party kills a dragon and takes its treasure, and the thief goes up a level but nobody else does?

Yes, but in 3e, if one person started the adventure a session or two later, or crafted a magical item, or missed an adventure, or died, etc, the thief may indeed go up a level while no one else does. Not much difference, really.

The varianble xp charts served one purpose. All classe are NOT created equally. How many threads have their been on how weak the fighter is? Just give him a faster exp progression. Done.

I don't think the fighter can be considered "weak" until the post 10th-level range, and that is just because there are so few high level feats out there. And even the assertion that he is weak at that point is arguable.

Yeah, that's a "kludge." It bangs it with a wrench until it kind of works, but it's obviously not made for that.

The "solution" would be to make the fighter strong.

Of course, if she''s weak to begin with is a matter of some debate, so I don't think you're quite accurate in stating your opinion as fact here, but even if it were true, giving him fast EXP progression is a pretty horrible way to compensate, isn't it?

I've had to delete a post which was just being rude about another community member. If you don't like someone, just put them on ignore please. Continued rudeness to people is likely to result in a short ban.

Thanks
