A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

I agree that your post wasn't on quite the same level, Buzz. :D

Honestly, though, I don't think the threads here have gotten out of hand. There's more discussion of older editions than there used to be, but overall even the "edition war" threads haven't been too bad.

Vbulletin 3 totally makes edition wars easier. You'd never see that with Vbulletin 1. And it totally nerfed Haste!

I know I'm an old grump. I just miss my shiny, happy ENWorld home that was. :)
That'd be ENWorld's 1st edition, right; where it's now on 3.5? :)

As for the rest of this:

- I always saw the 1e DMG secondary skills table as mere flavour, for helping build the background of your character...was it a farmer, a jeweller, a blacksmith, or whatever before it began its adventuring career...rather than mechanical aspects that may or may not give you some advantage. And the random roll aspect was just that; today's idea of pre-designed characters with lengthy back-stories wasn't so prevalent then, instead, you just rolled what you rolled, and played it till it dropped. :)

- Someone mentioned porting the 1e ExP tables over to 3e or d20...a fine idea, but it'd take some serious number-crunching to make it work; either that, or your 3e characters won't get far past about 8th level. (remember, there's no ExP for treasure in 3e...though I suppose if you put that back in as well you *could* port the charts without too much tinkering)
