Session 27 (02-02-2025): The Gathering Storm: Forging Alliances

The group is reminded that King Steppengard and his army will likely arrive at Gallo’s Fend in about 7–10 days.

March 18
The group arrives at Lord Dashgoban’s castle, where they are quickly and warmly welcomed as they ride in. Lord Dashgoban’s troops are already in full training, preparing for possible conflicts.
During the audience, it quickly becomes clear that Lord Dashgoban is willing to support Lord Gallo in the defense against King Steppengard. Additionally, he is more than willing to send some troops ahead to melt the Nasham River, provided that we first secure all the wood and pitch from the Pitchwood village.
A brief Augury spell cast by Barracus indicates that Dashgoban can be trusted (for now).

March 19
The group departs towards Lady Timor.

March 20
The group arrives at the village next to the Pitchwood (Pitchwood Burg). There, after some semi-intimidation by Athoz, the village leader/mayor is quickly convinced that giving up their pitch and wood supplies serves the greater good, as Steppengard would seize them anyway, regardless of who wins. To ease the burden and possible hardships caused by surrendering these materials, the party donates various amounts of gold to help the villagers through the winter (8-20-17(/800)-20 for a total of 65 GP).

March 21
The group reaches the Toraest Steppes mountain range. Here, they must decide whether to ollow the river north (dangerous) and climb the mountains (which means losing their horses) or take the well-traveled mountain path (safe but slower and difficult to stay hidden).
At the entrance to the mountain pass near the Churnett River, they are stopped by a blockade of Steppengard’s soldiers (possibly the previously mentioned Talon). After a brief conversation, it becomes clear that these soldiers are preventing all (diplomatic) travelers from entering Timor’s lands.
With their extravagant clothing and presence, the group is quickly recognized as foreigners likely on a mission for someone—soooo, that means a fight.
The soldiers whistle, and a troll emerges from under the bridge.
After a brief battle, the troll and four of the six soldiers are dead, while two surrender.
Athoz, Elio, and Kyra argue for executing the soldiers to avoid future trouble, but Barracus strongly opposes this and convinces the party to take them as prisoners of war to Lady Timor, transporting them on horseback.
They ride on.

March 22
Upon arriving at Lady Timor’s domain (surrounded by several wizard towers), they find that her forces are also preparing for conflict—though here primarily mages are being trained.
The group is welcomed, and after a brief discussion, Lady Timor also joins the alliance. At their request, the prisoners (under the supervision of Barracus and Elio) are questioned about the upcoming conflict. They reveal little beyond what the group already knows, except that Steppengard’s forces will use trolls (they had four, but one was already slain at the bridge), the troops will fight under the command of Königsmarshal Malkan and that a powerful war wizard, Kelkin Thravanvost, will be present.
Additionally, the group is reminded that aside from Steppengard himself, Lord Iz, Lord Megadon, and Lady Namin will also side with the enemy.

March 23
With their final ally secured, the group heads back toward the Steppes. At the Glaskeel Cliffs, they receive magical assistance from Timor’s wizards, who use a fly spell to carry them safely and swiftly downward—horses included.

Session 28 (08-03-2025): The Night Before

The group discusses whether they need anything else for Lady Timor’s journey to Lord Gallo.
Once they are on their way to Lord Gallo, they decide to summon the Fire Elemental on a grassy field at the end of the day—the one Baraccus mentioned on March 17.

During this session Elio’s and Athoz’ players were not present. Therefore we decided to move this encounter to next session. Chronologically this will happen on March 23, but we will play it out during next session.

March 24
The group arrives at Gallo’s Fend. In the distance, they see a plume of smoke—it seems the Nasham River is on fire as planned. Kyra goes her own way from here, as the group no longer needs her.

Elio’s player’s girlfriend has tried D&D, but didn’t like the combat part, so she won’t be joining us anymore.

March 25
Lord Dashgoban’s army arrives at Gallo’s Fend.

March 27
Lady Timor’s army arrives at Gallo’s Fend.

March 28
King Steppengard’s army arrives at Gallo’s Fend.
The group is invited to Lord Gallo’s war council to plan for the upcoming battle. Lord Gallo deems them best suited for the following two crucial missions tonight.
  1. There are catapults in King Steppengard’s camp. Destroying them would greatly aid the fight. This could be done covertly during the night.
  2. On March 22, the group learned that the powerful war mage Kelkin Thravanvost is among King Steppengard’s forces. Assassinating him would significantly weaken the enemy.
They choose to pursue the second objective. Additionally, they gather firewood and pitch, spreading it along the Nasham River near Gallo’s Fend to make it harder for King Steppengard’s to enter Gallo’s Fend.
They sneak invisibly toward Kelkin Thravanvost’s tent, which is fortunately positioned at the very edge of the camp. Carefully, they slip under the tent’s fabric. Vashera attempts to assassinate him in his sleep with an axe, but at that moment, an alarm goes off. The guards spring into action. Vashera quickly finishes Kelkin off, and the group flees. A loyal gynosphinx pursues them, but they manage to defeat her as well. In the end, the mission was much easier than expected.

I kind of forgot about the alarm (I only remembered it when Vashera was already about to kill Kelkin, but st that point it was kinda useless), so it was a bit anti-climactic. Oh well, naughty word happens, especially when you’re tired.

On their way back, they ignite the wood and pitch along the Nasham River.

They decide to not go on the catapult mission and get some rest so they are well-prepared for tomorrow’s battle.

Session 29 (23-03-2025): The Flames of War and the Stormchaser’s Heart

As said in the previous post, the encounter with the Fire Elemental happened on (in-game) march 23, but we only played it out during this session.

Back to March 23
The group summons a fire elemental. It claims that its name is "the Fire God of Urendel".
Baraccus speaks to it in Ignan. The elemental tells Baraccus that the bond between their plane and the Plane of Fire has grown stronger.
Baraccus asks if there is any news about the Flamebringer. The elemental has no updates on that but does share news about the Stormchaser. It appears that a mage has found the Stormchaser's heart and used it to gain immortality. This mage is affiliated with the Knights of the Aquiline Cross.
Baraccus has a lot of knowledge of the Elemental Lords and is a member of the Order of the Phoenix. The elemental states that if a battle were ever to break out between the Flamebringer and the Phoenix, it would side with the Flamebringer. Only Athoz understands their conversation.
The group launches an attack, which turns out to be surprisingly easy. Athoz helps in the battle and gains some impressive buffs from his ring.

Back to March 29
The group is back at Gallo’s Fend. It is the day of the battle against King Steppengard. They are asked whether they want to join Lord Gallo’s troops (infantry) or Lord Dashgoban’s troops (cavalry). The group decides to fight with the infantry.
They learn that they have many comrades, including mages, archers, and additional war mages. They also receive a device that can summon a xorn.
The group only needs to survive two waves of enemies before being relieved.
The battle is intense. Brakken the Blitzer dies (of course, because of Vashera!).
Athoz is heavily targeted by a catapult and various enemies. <- WHY ALWAYS ATHOZ!?!
They defeat the first wave of enemies, but their resources are already running low...

Oh, btw, we have a slightly different backstory for the monastary of the two winds to link it with this order of the phoenix thing. It's more elemental-focused.
