Abilities with Prerequisites & taking the prerequisites at the same time?

Oh, I don't read it as "an undetermined point around the same time and potentially before".

I read it as "at the same time". Hence the phrasing: "at the same time", which I think does an admirable job of conveying that meaning.

Hm. So, for the purpose of the rules, a single transcendent Highlander-like moment occurs when Krusk gains a level, during which he simultaneously gains skills, feats and class features and already has them? I don't like it. This isn't quantum physics here. Assuming things to happen "at the same time" in 3e tends to end in tears.

Then use the optional training rules in the DMG (pg 197+) - that system will allow (and reinforce) the methodology (and logic) you are talking about. Otherwise the text Hyp is talking about is accurate and falls under the simplified (and abstract) system(s) for many things that D&D uses.

Your house ruling of equating University class requirements to feat selection is just plain not germane. We are not talking Calc 1 and Calc 2, we are talking about a 6th level fighter with Power Attack using one of his feats to select Cleave, and his second feat at that level to take Great Cleave, which we know he qualifies for.

I think it is perfectly in line with the discussion. If you have a problem with the university class example, then let's take it to something more similar but still real-world to equate with the game - martial arts.

You can practice the bow staff and the split bow staff at the same time equal amounts per day and then at the same time be of equal ability the the two items at the same time. This would equate to learning combat Expertise and Improved Disarm together. You can practice disarming and practice attacking defensively in conjunction with each other.

However you cannot attain your first and second degree black-blets at the same time in the same discipline, which is what taking cleave and greate cleave at the same time ammounts to.

Again I know that by the rules this is incorrect. The rules are actually very clear on this and say that you can do it no matter what the two feats are.

Why can you not attain first and second degree at the same time (or, rather, within minutes or hours of each other. If you are ready and can do it, why not? Why can you not be tested for them both, one right after thr other, if you are worthy?
