Ability scores.

First Post
I wanted to post a house-rule that I was wanting to try, I used it on my own DM time yesterday. Luck and Beauty are added to ability scores, giving the point-buy system 4 extra points at start up. so 28 would be 32, 30 would be 34, ect., ect. Beauty would be how attractive one is and how people react to them. Luck would let the character have as many rerolls as bonuses and let also give bonus to gambling, a house-skill.

Now the question is, what do you guys think of this?:heh:

I like being able to choose how you look, and it being fairly independant of an ability score (You can be the best looking guy ever, but with a low charisma, you just put people off somehow).

As for luck, I prefer action points, and possibly even tying it to charisma.

Yeah, tying luck to Cha is a good way of boosting the weakest stat in the game...though it might lead to bards, paladins, and sorcerers having a little too much power...

As for beauty I'd rather have it as a feat. You may take the beauty feat to gain a +2 to all Cha-based skills (with the exception of Disguise and Intimidate) from people who would find you attractive (both genders).

well Charisma is meant to be the Inner beauty.. and i guess as well as outer...

Nymph ... is a Wonderful and very beautiful creature, there is a reason for it having a lot of Charisma...

btw, Are you going to revise every monster to apply 2 abilities? Does these have any other effect than those desribed? (luck already does it's part) but does beauty interact with anything?

Yup, for each encounter I plan on doing, I'll reroll the ability scores to the according monster or NPC. So far it been doing good, except for the luck, its a 50/50 chance it'll work the way I want it. my friend, Chris; a girl, with the rogue character thought it'd be funny to play a smart, charming, gorgeous, innocent 15-yaer-old girl, with an alignment of CN. Pain in the *beeeeep* butt, good thing theres always background for plot hooks.

So, you split up Charisma, the arguably (mechanically) weakest ability already, up into two, so you need even more points to get a decent level there!?

No good idea at all! :)

Not anymore. Charisma isn't about beauty at all. It's about force of will (willpower). It's about the character's ability to get his abilities/thoughts/desires be the ones acted on... STRENGTH of personality. ... Well, willpower for everything except the willpower save, which is for some reason put on the stat that's about perception...

Actually, physical attractiveness is listed in the PHB under Charisma. :)

High Cha doesn't have to mean physical attractiveness, but it could mean that.

I remember comliness from previous editions. Covered beauty. Problem with this is that it would need to be race/sex/region/ethno centric. I'm never going to find a dwarf more beautiful than a human, simply because I am human.

I don't allow luck in my game.

Luck isnt going the way I want, and the players seem to hate it in battle. So I made it for skills instead. Example: If they failed a diplomancy check, depending on the luck bonus, they could keep going at it X many times. Or a bad climb check on a cliff wall, they could reroll and catch themselves from falling. I think it would be easier, since it worked on the cliff part.
