Abjurant Champions

Diirk

First Post
The first level ability states that any time you cast an abjuration spell that grants you an armour or shield bonus, you increase the value of that bonus by your PrC class level. It states "Abjurant champions rely on mage armour, shield and similar spells instead of actual armour."

One problem... mage armour is a conjuration spell, not an abjuration. Oops? Are there any abjuration spells that provide an armour bonus? Only thing I can think of offhand is magic vestment, and thats a cleric spell. (And technically, its not an armour bonus... its an armour enhancement bonus).

There aren't very many. I think the number comes in around 5 or 6. Some people believe that it should apply to Mage Armor, too. I'm one of those people. It's mentioned in the description and it's part of the sample character. It makes sense. Or, just to appease those people who get crazy about it, you could just call Mage Armor Abjuration and be done with it.

RAW, Mage Armor doesn't work. But the whole point of the class was to take advantage of that spell.

So it becomes:

Mage Armor
Conjuration/Abjuration
...
...

Done.

Diirk, just because they rely on it, does not mean they get to boost it. Boosting shield is more than enough. They can get bracers like everyone else ifthey want better than +4 out of mage armor.

I say take it out of conjuration completely. The spell protects far more than it conjures.

I also say Feather fall should be an abjuration.

Feather Fall to me seems Transmutation.

A "Conjuration" Mage Armor would conjure up a *real* suit of armor, out of thin air. As it stands, Mage Armor belongs in Abjuration.

By RAW, you have two options:

Ectoplasmic Armor - Spell Compedium - 1st level - armor bonus that's only effective against incorporeal touch attacks - +5 at 1st-level, +9 at 16th-level in addition to any Abjurant Champion bonuses.

Luminous Armor/Greater Luminous Armor - Book of Exalted Deeds -2nd level/4th level Sanctified - +5 and +8 armor bonus respectively plus an additional "brightness" effect but has a sacrifice component.

Surely it would be an Abjuration if you look at it alone; with the whole spell list, both 1st level armor spells would be Abjuration, and anyone with Abjuration prohibited would be in a bit of a fix (not that they wouldn't be in a fix without Abjuration spells later down the line anyway...). I suspect Mage Armor was made Conjuration to balance out the spell lists when they were first made, not because anything about the spell makes it particularly Conjurationy.

And Feather Fall works fine in Transmutation, along with Fly, Levitate and Reverse Gravity. Sort of a Transmutation sub-theme, eh?
