The example you gave is pretty accurate. PCs are unique in that they have far greater free will than most NPCs. (The PCs as heroes tend to be exceptional, they can often see past the lies that full most of the people most of the time.)

A very nasty tactic to use against someone with a high diplomacy roll or spellcasting abilities is the old silence spell on a coin. Or possibly a spell to temporarily make one's allies deaf. (There was a low level illusionist spell for this in 1st edition.)

Odysseus was able to ignore the songs of the sirens by sticking something in his ears. (I have not read the Odyssey for a while.)
