The thread was obviously based on current edition. If you're not interested in that, then perhaps responding in this thread is not necessary.

I can only speak about myself and the Loremaster. The Loremaster is a class that´s fairly easy to attain for a wizard, and is plain better then the Wizard. 2 more skillpoints per level, and special abilities every level.
The abilities aren´t very impressive maybe, but at least he has some. And they fit the image of the wise and knowledgable wizard a lot better then the "real" wizard class...

I like that analysis. Thanks. :)

Interesting comment but is that really the case?

well from a rules standpoint it is possible to do, but I have never seen a paladin with ranks in hide. I even had a NPC paladin spy - but he took ranks in bluff and IG. Sunder is a terrible feat, and really only taken by Ftrs who have the feat to burn.
I haven't considered the possiblities of the CAdv - It may be easier than it used to be.

mostly cuz int is the dump stat for many paladins too.

with 2 pts for class. 1 pt for being say human. and then losing 1 or 2 pts b/c int is dumped. you don't have many pts to use in crossclass skills.

on top of the fact that 5 ranks in a crossclass skill is pushing you up in levels.

Is it possible that there really aren't enough CORE PrCs? Or that the selection of CORE PrCs (Arcane Archer, Arcane Trickster, Archmage, Assassin, Blackguard, Dragon Disciple, Duelist, Dwarven Defender, Eldritch Knight, Hierophant, Horizon Walker, Loremaster, Mystic Theurge,Shadowdancer, and Thaumaturge) don't really span enough options? Or that they aren't all that tempting for other reasons?

They're not that tempting because they're balanced. When you look at them, you look back at Ranger and say, "You know, I could stay doing this for a while. 20 levels even."

Loremaster is Just Plain Better than Wizard, as is Archmage.

Accessories often add PrCs which make you think "Wow, this is significantly better than staying a straight Ranger for 20 levels." That lack of indecision is the mark of imbalance.

The problem with 'core' prcs is that there aren't enough to give much choice for the different classes. For instance, using only 'core' prcs, a monk's options are...........

.................

.........

....limited.

For absolute power, Red Wizard hands down. You can do some sick stuff with that PrC, especially if you start out a specialist diviner. That way you can still have the possibility of going Archmage later.

My favorite core just for the fun of it is the Thaumaturgist. I just love the idea of making bargains with outsiders being the focus of your character.

I suspected as much.

I can see, though, how there are some DMs who might feel this doesn't fit thier campaigns, except for as an NPC PrC, perhaps.
