I have been using an outdated PC for about 6 years now ( a PII 400, 125m ram)... I went into a local computer store and found a used (2 months) Dell 4600, P4 2.6g, 512 m ram, 80 gig hd, dvd, cd burner and a gforce4 video card for....... 400 bucks!!!! I snapped that sucker up big time...

Just wanted to share my luck! :D

funny...

Hehe, funny you mention that... I advised that same system to someone who was low on money but wanted an upgrade from his P700mhz with crappy intel chipset... It´s quite a decent buy, that 4600 system. Even has a Geforce 4mx onboard (instead of intel or SIS). Ok, it´s not radeon but good nonetheless:)

Happy computing/gaming/whatevah with your new buy!:)

Hmm... the only recent intel chipsets that can be reasonably categorized as crappy are the 810/810e and the 820 (single-channel RDRAM and a P3 is not a good combo for any reason), unless someone made an 815/815e board without an AGP slot.

Well, main reason for mentioning that is that I have a laptop with a P4 2.0ghz and the SIS650 chipset. A baaad combination gamewise... I can barely run NWN. It only runs decent when in 800x600 resolution and lots of eyecandy turned off. And then it still stutters too much for my liking. I've heard similar reports about the intel chipset. The main problem is that they use shared memory for vidmem.... But it runs, so I'm not trading in my laptop (yet) and it's perfect for my job.... (and D&D on mIRC:))

However, I do consider buying a Dell next time. I'm now in the process of upgrading my other desktop PC, but that goes very slowly (too much to invest in and around the house). One day..:) One day!:)

Traverse has a good computer store? Every since TechOne or something like that (It was right across from the Grand Traverse Mall, in those little two-buisness brown complexes) went out 5-6 years ago, I haven't found one...
