Abstract long rests

The premise of never being injured until 0 bothers me. Those "hits" didn't hit me? Then why am I saving against poison? Why does a cure spell heal me? That entire premise fails my litmus test. It too must go.
I think of it more as papercuts until bloodied, and more serious (but still non-lethal and non-hindering) injuries until 0, when you take your first life-threatening wound. So, as far as I'm concerned, as long as you don't drop to 0 or less, there is injury, but it's minor enough that what's actually being eroded is your stamina and your will to fight. And that is something that can be regained fairly quickly.

They might have hit you, but it was minor cuts, scratches, and nicks.

Honestly, I am puzzled why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp. Apparently they think it is more realistic for someone to take 5 deep wounds to the gut.

Then DND is, and has always been, the wrong game for you. From the very beginning, HP have been massively abstracted. (I kind of agree with the Poison example. Why I prefer saves for things like that, instead of AC. )

Yes, of course, why didn't I think of that? I've been playing the wrong game for 32 years. Thank you for enlightening me!

I get the concept. I just don't like it. I prefer the pre 3e model of hit points. For a better description of how it works than I can provide, go here: The Alexandrian - Misc Creations

As for healing overnight, I can accept 1 hit point per level, but thats as far as I can stretch my suspension of disbelief.

Er. You don't take any real hits till you reach bloodied, and no actual injuries till 0. So why Does healing overnight, from at least 1 or more, bother you?

Resource attrition.

Okay - let's not go to the "you are doing it wrong" debate. Abstracted does not mean irrelevant or that it isn't a resource that is managed.

If every version has had abstracted HP, and the healing of abstracted HP generates such an issue, then I'll stand by my claim.

I'm not claiming JRR is doing anything wrong. Merely that every version has had the same abstraction.
