Abyssal Genasi

I think the article could have used a hint more feats, but otherwise is fairly evocative.

The Enemy of the Abyss's first thing - the Abyssal Blood action point adder, is really powerful! "Spend an action point and every enemy within 3 gains ongoing 5 damage (save ends), gain regen 5 until none are taking this damage". I've never seen a "Spend an action point" power of a PP be that badass.

It is pretty awesome, though I don't think it overwhelms many other PP options (such as ones that give flat bonuses to damage or attacks for a round.) I think there are many others that are definitely more lethal - though what makes this one nice is the reliability, and the regen (even if the regen is only likely to be around for a turn or two.)

it seem to me that causticsoul (and watersoul, for that matter) is missing, and should have, a swim speed to go with that "you can breathe underwater" ability. otherwise, making a swim check makes no sense. why would you? to keep from drowning? the ultimate risk of failing swim checks is suffocation by drowning, which is moot in the case of watersoul and causticsoul genasi.

if i recall correctly, there are no other 4e d&d creatures that breathe underwater and do not have a swim speed. to be clear, i am not talking about creatures, like undead, who do not need to breathe, but creatures that specifically breathe underwater.

regarding the movement rules under the swim skill, they are appropriate for terrestrial creatures to reflect or represent their diminished movement abilities in water as opposed to on land. these swim movement rules should not be applicable to amphibious creatures. it seems to me that any race with the ability to breathe underwater probably spends a fair amount of time underwater and, consequently, would have a swim speed. kuo-toa and bullywugs both have swim speeds to reflect their amphibious nature; so, too, should watersoul and causticsoul genasi. if wotc believes that a swim speed as a racial trait would be imbalanced, then, at the very least, a heroic tier feat should be created to give them that option. it just makes sense from a fluff perspective.

just like the way that shifty is a racial feat for player character kobolds (uh, wait, that hasn't happened yet. oops.) ;-p

otherwise, great article.

Corrupted genasi reflecting the nature of the negative quasi-elementals?

I'm sold.

Only, can we get a 3rd edition retro-fan conversion please?

The use of "gravesoul" makes me think of Ravenloft elementals. So yeah, this opens the door for gravesoul, pyresoul, mistsoul and bloodsoul manifestations. Necrotic genasi (or "shadow genasi" if you prefer).

Hop to it, Schaefer!

I've written up some notes on the article's creation (partially in response to the feedback here and elsewhere) in my blog. I welcome further discussion.

Void Assumption
Ok so quick quastion on
" You cease to exist " along with "you reappear in the square of your choice within 3 squares of the square you left."

that is not a teleport or anything else (no keywords at all) so it gets you by anything??

example: Magic circle Vs all (The heroic tier rit) that blocks all 12th level or lower creatures...against a 7th level character. He can't bypass...telport...fly..walk...damage...anything this cirlce. Ok, so this character has the void power. Can he 'cease to exsit' next to it, and the begining of his next turn reappear in or out of it???

that seams a little broken to me. Maybe I miss read it. What does everyone else think???

Yep. Seems strong. Very limited range, and you can't increase that range using any of the usual teleport enhancers (which are trivially easy to stack if you put your mind to it), but no other limits.

Personally, I'd allow it.

Why not? "Don't hurt my friends, even if I am _not_ around. You can't escape my revenge." It just feels "cheap" because the rules suggest that it's hard to keep up Divine Challenge when you're not engaging your enemy.
No, I find it cheap for a Paladin to hide from someone he called down a divine "Let's step outside and duke it out mono-e-mono". It's appropriate for a rogue or someone equally craven, but not a PALADIN.

I love how you assume I'm criticizing it just because I said it was emo.
I love how you act like it's not a derogatory term, given how you used it as such the last time you used the word.

You are aware that Linkin Park and Black Clothing does not emo make, right? Goth and Angst and Emo are not the same thing. Emo is a specific subgenre within a subgenre that's way more specific than just anything that wears black, right?

When I read it I thought Zen Master or Nihilist, not today's cute derogatory word for dark.

Eymological fallacy, prescriptive vs. common usage, etc. "Paranoid" has a common meaning outside of the clinical. "Hysterical" doesn't mean womb-crazy anymore. Definitions drift, and may vary based on context (here, musical genre vs. general culture). It's an unwinnable argument on all sides.

Paladin of Sehanine, anyone? Not every Paladin serves Bahamut and ruins everyone else's fun. ;)

I'll ignore the flamebaiting, because frankly I really don't care that apparently everything I post offends you. Have fun.
