AD&D Commemorative Core 3: I Haz 'Em!

Yikes. It's a sad day indeed when a company that offers to donate some if its profits to charity is viewed with suspicion.

Not suspicion; I recognisie it for what it is -- a marketing ploy. A company can feel free to donate part of its profit or support a worthy cause in other ways. Just don't tie people's custom to that support.

So I look more favourably on companies that make donations to causes without tying it to marketing campaigns (for example, making a single donation to the memorial fund AFTER the books are sold) and/or promote the cause to their customers without forcing every customer to become an involuntary donor.

So is the binding quality up to the originals, or is it the poorer quality of later TSR?

My first-gen 1E manuals have fantastic bindings. The later prints (MMII and later) aren't nearly as good.

I always look sideways at companies that tie buying their product with donating to a cause.

If I want to donate, I'll write a cheque directly to the cause. That way I don't have to think about how little of the purchase price the charity is getting.

Sell me on the purchase from the intrinsic value of the item for sale not on the concept of a good deed.

Would a direct check have gotten the fund more money? Perhaps. But then again, all of my copies of the original Core 3 are "much loved", and despite holding up quite well over the decades, it is foreseeable that I'd have to replace them at some point.

I have just killed two harpies with one thunderstone.

Anyone know if you are going to be able to get these online? I, unfortunately, don't have a FLGS within a reasonable driving distance.

I ordered from Amazon since I don't know of any game stores within reasonable distance of me that exhibit any interest in RPGS much less D&D. They'll be a few weeks getting here.
