wow, that seems to be quite pricey since it's the same as light armor...

does the shield give damage reduction like the light armor does? otherwise it seems the only mechanical benefit to the shield is its hardness & hp vs someone trying to sunder it...

It's way better to make shields out of Mythral than Adamantine. There is no real benefit to make it out of adamantine (other than it will be more durable that is).

Adamantine --> Weapons
Mythral --> Armors and Shields

:)

I would rather take a 3/- DR from heavy adamantine armour any day , than have it count as medium armour because it's made of mythral. After all, I can always have a nimbleness (+1 cost) enchantment chucked onto it to gain the same effect... and keep the DR (which I cannot simulate with enchantments). For medium armour with DR 2/- its a less obvious choice, but can still be beneficial. As a dwarf, I wouldn't care for mythral in the first place. Mythral is peachy for light armours, especially on casters, due to its lwoered chance of spell failure, but that's about it.

Admantine shields have a secondary use, too - with "shield bashing" it may just be of some interest to know that an adamantine shield, especially if enchanted, can pierce severeal DRs (golems anyone) more easily than a wood/steel shield. Mythral doesn't help with this, either. Still, a costly investment for a minor benefit.
And of course, one thereby enters the much convoluted field of "shields as weaponry" enchantments and more or less inane rules by WotC. Tread there at your own danger.

And don't forget - shields are bludgeoning weapons, so they can be used to Sunder. An adamantine shield smashes a steel greatsword like a walnut, ignoring hardness less than 20...

Good for smashing through stone walls, too.

But definitely not recommended for biting your shield edge in frustration - unless you have a friendly dentist within reach, that is :]
