Other than Weapons of Legacy, are there other d20 compatible sources for items that grow in power after you invest character resources? I have a PC in my Ptolus game that is looking for a missing relic and I want it to be an item that was once very powerful but initially only provides an appropriately low level boon.

There was an article in Dragon Magazine about a year ago for weapons that you invested xp in to increase their power. Sorry I cannot give you any more help. Does someone out there know the issue #?

The DMG II has rules for bonding with weapons and performing rituals to make them more powerful as the PC grows in power.

Monte Cook's Book of Eldritch Might III has some pretty neat rules for advancing intelligent items.

The Midnight campaigns etting has 'covenant items' that gain additional powers, bonuses and effects as the wielder increases in level; basically like the levelled items article from Dragon Finester cited but without investing XP into them.

I used the concept in 2E as well - basically, there were certain items in the campaign which gained a new ability every time the owning character leveled.

The Dragon article which had the leveling items I didn't like too much - the DM basically had to plot out all the abilities in advance, and it was much more expensive to level the item than to have an equivalent one crafted for you. Since my 2E experiment, I decided I prefer giving the players the option to choose the item's powers.
