(Adventure) A hunting trip

Katherine and Aranel waited at the entrance to the Barn, paused to decide upon the best course of action as telerin,Remi and Whitefang joi them, bolstered with Bron Bekkle's gifts. The rain seems to grow in it's downpour again, as the Sun grows dimmer still...

Whitefang seems to be growling low, though not specifically at anything in the Barn.

Remi comes up behind Katherine and Aranel, bow at the ready, trying to get a good look at the barn. Is the door open? Some large gaping hole where the beast plowed it's way in? Or is it more likely that the beast may be behind the barn? Mabye a trail of blood from Darryn having speared it?

(to Katherine & Aranel)
"Spotted anything yet?"

"Spotted anything yet?"

Katherine shakes her head slightly. "Nothing. Unless something charges right at me, I'm going to light up the barn. Do we have any better idea of what this thing IS?"

As soon as she is given a open door window or other opening into the barn, Katherine will fire the lighted quarrel into the ceiling rafters. If its a normal sized barn, the the feathers should light up the whole place. She will then use a move action to reload, unless she sees something that makes her move away instead.

Katherine moves to the entrance of the Barn, flanked by her stalwart companions. Firing her shot into the ceiling (it's a rather low barn, 20' ir so, so the whole area is indeed lit up), her eyes alight upon...

A Scene out of Nightmare

The entirety of the barn is covered in blood... mangled bodies of horses and what must have been cows lie eviscerated, entrails strew about randomly. A pig's head lies near the door, it's body absent. Chickens lie everywhere and near the back of the barn...the body of what must have once been farmer Krimp.
The old man is impaled upon a pitchfork, stuck to the Barn wall, his limp form missing an arm, blood still dripping from the stump. The smell of blood, viscera and feces is overwhelming in this abbatoir of horror.

<Fort Checks DC 15,Remi made it, everyone else, minus Whitefang) failed...>

Retching and gagging (vomiting in the case of Aranel), you stagger from the doorway of the place, trying to clear your lungs of the stench of such a scene.
< Katherine and Telerin are at -1 to all activity for 1 minute, Aranel is at -2>

Telerin nearly choked at the scene. Such carnage...yet it seemed almost directed. He coughed again and knelt down, shaking his head and trying to clear his mind. He glanced to Aranel, seeing a sight he'd rather not wished to have seen.

In a hoarse voice, he said, "Just turn away,Aranel...go walk back to the building...with Whitefang if you want..."

Katherine turns away to breath in the wet purity of the rain, but forces her gaze back inside to confirm what she hopes she didn't see. Between gasps, she tugs Remi's sleeve.

"The pitchfork... it can use weapons... we may be in a lot of trouble."

"Aranel, no." She says when the elf woman starts to go back to the house. "We have to all stay close." Again she forces her gaze to the horror in the barn, trying to memorize the scene and hunting for anything which indicates the creature which did this. "If it was wounded at all, I imagine we don't have much time to track it... I don't know much about hunting, but this rain can't be good for it."

While she is not a seasoned tracker as of yet, Katherine does remember where she saw something Big at the edge of the Woods...

"Smart enough to use weapons?" Remi thinks to himself; "I only hope we're not the ones being hunted."

"You're probably right Katherine, but we can't let it escape. If it's going to make an orphan out of another little girl it's going to have to go through me first. We need to find it quickly, before the rain washes away the tracks.

Katherine, didn't you say you spotted something at the treeline earlier? Where was it?"

The stench and sight hit her like a club to the head, she staggered back a few steps, dropped her rapier and turned, unable to make it to the door, where the fresh air and the realtively clean sights lay she collapsed to her knees and vomited.
The others voices swirled around her head for a moment while she faught the urge to vomit again and curl up.
Searching her pockets she finally pulled out a scarf of sorts ripped it to use half to wipe her mouth and the other to wrap around her face covering her mouth and nose.
Standing up shakily she braced herself and turned around again. Gagged slightly and whimpered. "I think...the body....take it down..." her weak voice slightly muffled by the fabric. "To be buried later..."

Telerin suddenly felt torn. Yes...this body deserved to be buried. But...the creature couldn't be too far if this was as fresh as it looked. Something was spotted in the woods.
He coughed again, and turned around to watch the woods, "We must...must go on. If we wait...it could do this again..."
