Adventure Choices

I just picked up Spellgard, and it looks like the winner for wotc 4e adventures so far. Some decent plot points, and it actually has, you know, NPC interaction and stuff. I hear that's something RPG fans want... as opposed to, say, the other adventures. *cough*

*** MINOR RESCUE AT RIVENROAR SPOILERS ***

....

The dungeon is bland, and almost feels random in its design. Again, I moved some stuff around, transformed the glowing glyphs trap into a sort of puzzle that opens a door I added. The denizens haven't figured out the puzzle, so if the players do, they'll have a safe room in which to retreat and store the villagers they'll have rescued.

AR

That's a nice idea. I've been running RaR, and I've had pretty much the same experience as you: early encounters fun, dungeon itself confused. The players seem to be enjoying themselves, though I think it's because most of them haven't played 4e before and they're finding the new combat system a lot more fun.

The player's have just reached 2nd level: I've been thinking of bringing RAR to a rapid close and then running Scepter Tower since it starts at 2nd level.

I've played through KotS and both I and the DM found it way too heavy on combat encounters - it seems odd they've built the new skill challenge system and used it so little. Probably because the system wasn't finished when KoTS was written.

It's a fairly polarizing suggestion, but you could try to get your hands on some of the RPGA's Living Forgotten Realms adventures. There are at least 10 level 1 adventures available right now.

There are many people who love this sort of thing, and there are many people who will punch you in the junk for even suggesting it. If you haven't tried it, it might be worth the effort to give it a shot once or twice. I can tell you that product quality has improved somewhat over previous campaigns with a more hands-on approach from WotC.

(Regarding the paperwork involved - you only have to participate as much as you like. Worst case, you have to have one person join the RPGA and order the adventures, and then just cancel them if you can't be bothered to fill in results - but at least the adventures are free!)

I GMed (AGAL 1-1) Lost Temple Of THE Fey Gods, an LFR a few days back

Excellent low level 4e adventure, some fun roleplaying bits and a couple of very good combats

Is it only me that have found KotS ripe for plot? I mean there are good descriptions on a lot of NPCs in Winterhaven, good examples of conversation with said NPCs and even tips on how to play out the VILLAIN? Cliché maybe, but it's descriptions, not only stats. The area around Winterhaven is also decently fleshed out for more ideas of sidetrekking.

Thunderspire on the other hand.. sure it was an interesting area, but in the end just claustrophobic. I know it is DUNGEONS & Dragons, but since this is also year 2008, a little variation is nice.
