Adventure ideas inside a city!

So I've just got my group of noob PCs into a moderately sized city for the first time. They are all second level, and so far we've gone through a dungeon crawl, and a little bit of wilderness adventure.

Now that we are in a city, what are some fun plot hooks and adventure ideas to throw out to them?

So far everyone is a little shy when it comes to talking in character, or to NPCs, but they are all new, so we're working on it. In the party there is a Ranger, a Druid, a Bard and a Necromancer.

An idea off the top of my head: The PCs are approached and asked if they would track down a magic book said to be within the city.

Courier work? They're hired to escort a package from point A to point B within the city and get waylaid along the way? (My last Shadowrun game was this - the team was to escort a heart transplant from the airport to the hospital.)

There's also the chance to do bodyguard work. Bodyguards aren't expected to be talkative but if you were looking to move into an intrigue plot - it's a good way to give them city background information.

They could play bouncer at a local bar too. Or if your city has pit fighting... There are a *lot* of plots possible in a city...
 

The local pit fights include fights of wild animals, and they are invited to witness one.
[What will the Druid and Ranger think/do about it?]

At this event, they are approached by a man who, by his clothes seems to be a noble.
They are asked to kill the mayor.
(Who?
Why?
Were they intended to be the ones asked to do so in the first place?
Which side will they take?
What will they do to get near the -recently cloistered- mayor?)
 

Hmmm... one of them looks like someone who owes one of the thieves money.
or

There is a tournament being organised for a celebration of something... they participate

or

They see a girl being manhandled and go to the rescue, after which they are employed for xyz

or

one of them gets pick-pocketed and an important item to them gets stolen and they need to try to get it back.

Lots of options.......
 



They are asked to clear out a haunted house....
If they are succesful, they can keep it....
Once it is theirs, the local thieve's guild comes along and demands protection money...
There are sewers beneath the house, and rumor has it ppl are disappearing and someone spotted saurial creatures dragging them into the sewers...
 

The party is accused of (theft/murder/arson/heracy/etc) and is required to clear their name by finding out what's going on while being on the run from the local (constabulatory/priesthood/thieves guild/noble/etc). They are required to live in the underground, or justr avoid the underground, and clear their name or be punished and have to escape.
 

I love the haunted house idea. I'll have to find some good spooks for second level guys!


The PCs witness an attempted murder, and they are asked to find the killer, and to testify against him.

In my first adventure ever, our group was completly freaked out about that area of the tunnel of seemingly REALLY dense air.
