Ferris grunts with the pain of the vine-creatures thorns, trying to resist the pulling effects, flexing his considerable strength to burst free.

Unfortunately he loses his footing and fails. Gritting his teeth he suddenly throws his weight into the pulling and yanks hard the side trying again to break free!

Yet still the creature holds him...! Feeling that Dayna has abandoned him he looks around to see the state of his comrades. Seeing Jezebel looking a bit pale from blood loss, Ferris bestows Dayna's Blessing of health upon her from his spiny predicament.

@Samursus - formatting looks great to me!

@Luinnar - Just a reminder that you are entitled to a shift as part of the escape action but, in this case, you're on difficult terrain, so you could only shift toward not away from the stirge. So, in any event your ranged attack will provoke an OA from it.[/sblock]

As Alnar casts his Acid Orb, the stirge sees an opening and darts in to reattach itself. Bann-ur has other ideas however, he reaches out his hand, and the wind itself responds in answer, blowing the insect-like creature toward him. Bann-ur then smacks the stirge with his Maul, severely damaging one of its wings. Now badly injured, the stirge decides to cut and run, and as it does so, Alnar swats it with his quarterstaff damaging another wing.

Dealing with the stirge leaves Bann-ur open from behind however, and one of the vine creatures is quick to take advantage. It whips a thorned, viny appendage around the goliath's neck and begins pulling him back toward the mangrove tree from which it emerged. Meanwhile the other vine wrapped around Ferris gives a tremendous squeeze, opening several wounds with its thorns and causing the cleric to pass out from pressure and shock. It keeps dragging the shifter's unconscious form back toward the bushes...

Ferris desperately needs help!

I'm willing to burn my action point and daily power, but I think freeing Ferris is top priority.

[sblock=tactics]I won't have much of a chance to get to Ferris on my round. Jezebel sucks at athletics and acrobatics (she's powered by Faith, not muscles!), so getting free from the stirge isn't very easy. Even if she gets free with a move action, that only leaves a move action to get to Ferris.

Her heal check isn't so great either (+0), so I wouldn't easily be able to give Ferris his second wind. I think the best thing for her to do is continue trying to get free and act as a tank (get the monsters' attention), rather than attempt to help.[/sblock]
 

[sblock=GM]Wondering how I took 18 damage. The roll link after my attack takes me to Bann-Urs attack , and assuming its the same Impaling Thorn I should only have taken 12 points max. Not saying its a mistake, but hoping it might be :) [/sblock]
 

[sblock=ooc]@samursus - Sorry about the incorrect link. I fixed it in the above post. After the bloodthorn vines grab someone with impaling thorn, they can sustain standard the following round for 2d8+4. It rolled a really high damage roll. It wasn't a mistake unfortunately. :eek:

@Everybody else - I'll let anyone else make an athletics check in Ferris' stead to free the shifter from the vine. Or, for that matter any of your other skills can come into play if you roll well, and can think of an appropriate use for them. Be creative![/sblock]

Arcana = 22, there is a magical aura, so they could be plants brought to life by magic! ;)

I'll wait to see if Jezebel can pull the Stirge out. With any luck we'll be able to free Ferris and I can lob some Ice Javelins at the monsters.

I was hoping my heal check on Ferris would get him up so he could do some more healing on himself, but sadly Jezebel is less proficient in healing than she is at causing lots of pain.

Bann-ur has good odds of freeing Ferris if he dedicates his turn to it. A heal check to revive Ferris is only a DC 10, but we all have +0 to the check (except Ferris himself).[/sblock]
Ferris's plight does not escape Jezebel's notice. With the shifter's life on the line, she seizes her attacking stirge and throws it to the ground. Before it has a chance to recover, she turns toward Ferris and charges the vine devouring him, cracking her whip as she goes.

"Hyaah! *crack* Get off of him! *crack* Tiefling blood over here!"

However, the noise seems to have little effect on the animate plant, nor do her strikes actually hit the vine. Now standing beside Ferris's limp form (as well as the vines), Jezebel gives a light kick to the fallen cleric. She commands "Get up if you don't want to be eaten," but it turns out that a platemail boot to the ribs is not a terribly effective way to revive someone.

[sblock=Alnar]As far as you can tell, the plants are in fact natural creatures. However, you guess that due to the unusual nature of their sentient, yet herbaceous nervous systems, a pulp made from their head/mouth bulbs would likely make a powerful ritual component.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Any ideas for Bann-ur's actions in case we don't hear from Phoenix in the next day or so?

Also, we'll need a death save from Ferris this round.[/sblock]
