(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

OOC: Phew, those points in Con seem well-spent now.

"I for one would prefer to get out of this wretched rain. Perhaps it's not as wet once we get a bit inside the structure? By the way, has anyone seen that creature which followed us earlier lately?"

Nezrak looks around and then ansvers to Mona and Ogrin: "Agreed, I think we should try to get inside. That might be more comfortable. Maybe."

Scraping the rest of the slippery slime off of the stairs was a job unmolested by further events, though it was tedious. The better part of an hour had already passed when they had completed making a suitable and safe path to the bottom of the steps. Rasereit's racial senses told him that the steps they used descended approximately 20 feet.

As the night settled around them, the mist seemed to give off a ghoulish, ephermal glow as lights danced about in the distance. This illumination was too slight to be of any use to anyone but the grey elf. Nezrak could see well enough on the surface (still hindered by the mist) but when he went underground, he would need a light source.

The stairs were steep and ended in a large, flooded room bereft of furnishings. The floor here was slightly slippery (though not as hazardous as the steps) and was covered by 1 foot of water. The sound of its passage echoed across stone walls and masked subtler noises.

There was one other exit to this room besides the stairs upward: a hall that was flanked by two doors and whose end they could not yet see.

ooc: Some of you will need a light source to go down the stairs. The night has now settled to starless darkness. Remember that some of you have drenched stuff.

Nezrak shakes his head. "Doesn't look too promising. I'm not really interested in stumbling in full darkness there, and the place really doesn't seem to be any more dry than the surface. Should we rest and leave the exploration until morning?"

OOC: If the group decides to rest, Nezrak will change some spells again. Are the ceilings of the hall and room 5ft high?

"I agree, we should wait for morning before exploring further. While I do have a lantern, and some candles, we should preserve them for when absolutely necessary."

/ooc Assuming the party camps for the night, Rillian will convince Scun to walk with him to the trees, and collect some wood. These will be for fire, but Rillian will attempt to carve a simple wooden replica of Mona's holy symbol as a replacement for her. Note that he has no skill as such, but the value is minimal, and he can take 10 (or 20 if you will allow).

ooc: Stating the obvious just in case: the daylight above will do little to affect darkness of the subterranean ruins.

ooc2: Where are you guys setting up camp? Remember that there is a foot of water in the ruins. There's also the rain (but you can probably find a rock or a large piece of the ruin for shelter for that).

ooc3: It will take a few hours to get to the trees and a few hours back, if you are willing to walk that far. As I said to Rasereit, there is no vegetation in the area.

ooc4: Looking at the craft rules, Rillian won't be able to make a holy symbol for her, at least not without proper materials and certainly not in half a day. Despite the fact that it is wooden, I consider it a high quality item (it costs 1 gp) and not mundane (it is a HOLY symbol after all). Also, he will need supervision from someone with ranks in knowledge: religion to make it.

Nezrak: The ceiling in the hall is about 10 feet from the ground.

/ooc Would wood from the trees and supervision from Scun and/or Mona be enough?? Or are there special materials simply not available to us here at all? If it is at all possible, Rillian considers Mona being able to cast spells easily significant enough to spend a few hours on. If it takes more than half a day...well then he can start now, and continue as more time presents itself. If not, then oh well :)

ooc: I'd imagine Rillian doesn't know enough about divine spellcasting to know the spellcasting significance of a holy symbol beyond its presentation. Scun would tell him otherwise if he asked though.

ooc2: I'm going to allow the creation of the holy symbol if you really want to. There are penalties for improvised tools (-2) and the DC is 15. If you ask me, it isn't worth the effort unless you have the time and the skill.

Here is my ruling on the matter:
  • You'll need materials equaling 1/3 of the HS' price to make it. Scun's club won't do but a few hours of scrounging in the jungle (survival skill) will allow you to find it. Not just any piece wood will do.
  • the DC for the HS is 15. Remember that failure by 5 means that the materials are wasted and you'll have to start over.
  • By the RAW, you can make daily checks instead of weekly checks. That means you have to accumulate 100 cps worth of effort to make the HS. And a single badly rolled check is enough to screw you up and make you start over.

It's not that it's impossible but given your current circumstances and skill. It's just extremely diffcult. Taking 20 in this case would mean a whole lotta time... perhaps even more time than it would take to accomplish this mission. Also, remember that the work on this takes time away from the other stuff you have to do, like rest. Theoretically, you could do this while on watch, but there's a penalty for distraction (+5 to the DC for Listen, -5 to the roll for Spot).

Sorry about the long windedness, but I didn't want to just say "No". While I would rather that Mona be there to provide some divine support for you guys, the replacement of her lost holy symbol is just something that would slow you guys down.

ooc3: Where are you guys going to make camp? Inside the ruin, in the swamp or in the jungle?
